LOWELL, MA – The College of Saint Rose had a nine-point second half lead wash away over the final 7:24 as the Golden Knights fell 66-64 on a last second put-back dunk at Northeast-10 Conference rival UMass Lowell this evening.
Freshman forward
Tyler Sayre led Saint Rose by scoring 20 points thanks to a 9-for-12 effort from the floor. Junior center
Dominykas Milka notched his third consecutive “double-double” and his 12th on the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Senior guard
Andre Pope chipped in with 11 points.
Junior guards Akeem Williams and Antonio Bivins scored 19 and 15 points respectively to lead the River Hawks (13-5/9-5 NE-10).
In a second half marked by runs, the Golden Knights (10-8/7-7 NE-10) used a 10-0 spurt capped by a 3-pointer from Pope to establish a nine-point advantage at 56-47 just past the midway point. Saint Rose maintained that lead until the 7:24 mark before UMass Lowell started to chip away.
The RiverHawks ended the game on a 15-4 surge with the winning bucket coming on a put-back dunk by Bivins with 1.3 seconds remaining. Junior guard
Dan Mundweiler had a contested look at a game-winning “three” as time expired that came up short.
UMass Lowell shot 65.0 percent (13-of-20) in the second half and 51.0 percent (25-of-49) for the game. The RiverHawks needed that efficiency as Saint Rose enjoyed a 37-26 rebounding advantage and a plus-nine shot differential for the game.
In the first half, the Golden Knights were able to erase an early 9-6 deficit with a 16-7 run throughout a 6:29 stretch to take a 22-16 lead at the 10:21 mark. Milka scored nine of the points for the Golden Knights during the charge on his way to a 15 point, seven rebound half. Saint Rose was helped by a 7-1 edge at the line as the Golden Knights took a 36-29 lead into intermission.
Saint Rose returns to the floor on Saturday at 3:30 pm when NE-10 foe Franklin Pierce visits the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. It will also be Alumni Chapter Day. UMass Lowell is also in action on Saturday with a 1:30 pm conference date at New Haven.
