ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose rallied from a 10 point second half deficit to upend
Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack 76-72 tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The game was close for most of the evening with six ties and 11 lead changes.
Freshman forward
Tyler Sayre finished 7-for-10 from the floor and scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Golden Knights (9-7/6-6 NE-10). Meanwhile, junior center
Dominykas Milka recorded his 10th “double-double” of the year with 14 points and 18 rebounds.
Also, senior guard
Andre Pope and junior guard
Dan Mundweiler had 17 and 15 points respectively to go with a combined 10 assists. Pope also knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, thus becoming one of only six Saint Rose players to record 200 (201) in a career.
As for the Merrimack (7-10/4-8 NE-10), freshman guard JT Strickland tossed in 18 points, while senior forward Mike Clifford and junior guard Kevin Regan wound up with 12 and 10 respectively.
After Regan converted a three-point play to make it 58-48 Merrimack with 10:32 to go, the Golden Knights took off on an 11-1 run that afforded the contest its fourth tie, 59-59, with 4:26 showing on the clock. Pope ignited the spurt by knocking down a jumper in the paint and then Sayre capped it with a 15-footer.
The teams traded baskets during the next minute, before Milka grabbed an offensive rebound and completed a three-point play to put the Golden Knights ahead to stay, 64-63, with 3:10 to go.
A minute later, Mundweiler netted a trey from the left corner and two minutes after that Pope went 1-for-2 from the free throw stripe to make it a five point, 70-65, affair with 42 ticks remaining. The Warriors kept the game exciting and eventually cut their deficit to a point, 73-72, after Travonne Berry-Rogers found nothing but the net on a long ball from the left wing with 10 seconds to go.
Pope then buried both of his chances from the stripe after he was fouled at midcourt and junior guard
Kareem Thomas came up with a steal to the secure the Golden Knights second consecutive victory.
Looking ahead, both teams have 3:30 pm conference games scheduled for Saturday. The Golden Knights will travel to Colchester, VT to take on Saint Michael's, while Merrimack will entertain American International in North Andover, MA.
After halftime of tonight's game, 128 student-athletes from Saint Rose were recognized for outstanding academic achievement by maintaining at least a 3.30 overall grade-point-average while representing the College in their various sports. The 2011 women's volleyball, the 2012 women's soccer, 2011-12 women's swimming & diving, and the 2011-12 women's track & field teams were honored as well after having been recognized by their coaches' organizations for superlative academic performance.
Also, the women's swimming & diving team was honored with the College's “large team” academic award, while the women's volleyball squad was honored with the “small team” academic award. The program was presented by
