EASTON, MA – Stonehill College maintained a double-digit lead for a majority of the second half to hold off The College of Saint Rose 71-61 earlier today at Merkert Gymnasium for a
Northeast-10 Conference win. The Golden Knights (7-6/4-5 NE-10) have lost four straight games while the win snaps a two-game skid for the Skyhawks (7-6/3-6 NE-10).
Junior center
Dominykas Milka led Saint Rose in scoring for the sixth time this year by posting game-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard
Kareem Thomas hauled in a career-high eight rebounds to go along with 13 points.
Furthermore, senior guard
Andre Pope became the 20th player in school history to amass 1,200 career points as he scored 11 points to bring his four-year total to 1,203. Pope also added a season-high four steals as well as a like number of rebounds and assists.
A 12-of-24 (50.0 percent) performance from beyond the arc highlighted a successful day for the Skyhawks. Senior guard Brian Hamor led Stonehill with 17 points on 4-of-8 (50.0 percent) shooting from 3-point range. Sophomore forward Jack Cole added 16 points and two steals while senior guard Sam Markle contributed 10 assists in 30 minutes off the bench. Stonehill also generated 22 assists on 27 made field goals.
The final lead Saint Rose was able to produce was at 9-8 with nearly six minutes gone by as Milka found junior guard
Dan Mundweiler for a layup. The Skyhawks regained the lead at 11-8 on a Hamor 3-pointer just a few plays later. Freshman guard
Chris Dorgler knocked down a trey to bring the Golden Knights within one point, 23-22. However, Stonehill ran into the locker room on a 14-6 run to have a nine-point, 37-28, advantage at the break.
In the opening stages of the second half, Hamor connected on an “old-fashioned” 3-point play with a layup and a free throw to give the Skyhawks a 42-30 lead, the first double-figure cushion on the afternoon.
Under four minutes to go, junior forward
Jin Hong created a steal that led to a Thomas layup and brought Saint Rose within seven, 62-55. However, back-to-back 3-pointers from freshman guard Carter Smith allowed Stonehill to push the lead back to double-digits and hold off Saint Rose in the final moments.
Saint Rose returns to road action this Wednesday when the Golden Knights tip-off against Southern New Hampshire in Manchester at 7:30 pm. The Skyhawks look to make it back-to-back victories this Tuesday when they host league-leader Assumption at 7:30 pm.
