Box Score 2 ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose busted open a two-run ballgame in the opener with a four-spot in the fifth, but was unable to manufacture a serious offensive threat in game two to split a
Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against the University of New Haven today at Cathy Cummings Haker Field. The Golden Knights took game one 8-3 before falling 4-1 in the nightcap.
Saint Rose (9-18/5-9 NE-10) led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth before putting things out of reach. Freshman catcher
Alexis Williams belted her fourth home run of the year in the frame, a high fly ball to center field that hit the top of the wall and bounced over. Sophomore center fielder
Amber Loussedes then reached on a bunt single and eventually scored from second base on a wild pitch.
Freshman right-hander
Lauren Sputo took care of the rest for the Golden Knights by retiring the next five batters in order and then inducing a ground ball to end the contest. Sputo recorded three strikeouts over the distance to notch her team-leading fifth complete game of the year while improving to 4-9 in the circle.
Williams drove in four runs and scored a pair to pave the way for Saint Rose. Senior second baseman
Kayla Kuilema finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Meanwhile, sophomore designated player
Olivia Reeves had a single and was walked three times, twice intentionally.
Sophomore third baseman Lindsey Couturier was the lone Charger (15-13/7-7 NE-10) with multiple-hits. She finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Freshman first baseman Jess Spivey added a double and two RBI as well.
In game two, New Haven struck first on the strength of a leadoff double by senior left fielder Shannon Angehr to start the contest. She scored when Francisco stroked a double to left center. Couturier also came across on a wild pitch after she was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.
That proved to be plenty of support for junior right-hander Alana Wesche. Wesche fanned eight and scattered four hits to earn her ninth victory of the season. Her only blemish occurred when Kuilema scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. Kuilema initially walked, moved up on a sacrifice from senior third baseman
Jessica Butterbrodt and advanced to third on a groundout.
The Golden Knights also received an outstanding pitching performance from senior southpaw
Sarah Arbogast. Arbogast did not surrender a hit in 4.1 innings of relief action. She chalked up four strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Saint Rose is scheduled to play its first road games since March 20 this Saturday when the Golden Knights head to Bentley University for a league doubleheader. Game one is set for noon in Waltham, MA. New Haven returns home to host C.W. Post in a non-league twin-bill at 3:00 pm tomorrow.
