SAINT ROSE SPLITS TWINBILL ON WALKOFF BLAST

Senior third baseman Jessica Butterbrodt delivered a walkoff homerun in game two as the Golden Knights split with Southern New Hampshire on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALBANY, NY – The College of Saint Rose softball team bounced back from a tough game one loss to forge a split with the Southern New Hampshire Penmen, claiming game two by a 2-1 final after dropping game one 10-0 in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader.

Game two was tied at 1-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh as senior third baseman Jessica Butterbrodt stepped to plate to lead off the inning. Butterbrodt wasted no time in sending the crowd home happy as she took the first offering from sophomore Dolores Mattice over the leftfield fence for her first homerun of the season, lifting the Golden Knights to a 2-1 victory.

The game had been scoreless into the bottom of the third inning when with two outs, Saint Rose sophomore centerfielder Amber Loussedes lined a ball into right-centerfield that she was able to turn into a hustle double. Her effort would be rewarded as the next batter, junior rightfielder Steph Luce lifted a single to center, bringing home Loussedes for a 1-0 Golden Knights lead.

Southern New Hampshire would draw even in the fifth as freshman pinch-hitter Holly Eicher led off with a single. A hit batsman and a fielder's choice would load the bases with one out. Junior shortstop Kate Stanley would come up and deliver a sac fly to left to score Eicher and knot the game at 1-1.

The game two win went to freshman right-hander Lauren Sputo  who tossed her eighth complete game of the season for the Golden Knights. Sputo (5-11) allowed seven hits and walked one while striking out four. Mattice (7-6) also went the distance for the Penmen allowing two runs on four hits, striking out eight.

In game one, the story centered around freshman pitcher/designated player Ali Maloof for Southern New Hampshire. Setting the tone early on, Maloof retired five of the first six batters on strikes. As the game went on, she only got stronger and was able to complete the task, pitching a five-inning perfect game, downing all 15 Saint Rose hitters she faced. Overall Maloof struck out eight in the contest.

The Golden Knights best chance came in the third inning when Luce hit a sinking line drive to rightfield. After getting a bad jump on the ball, sophomore Tesia Stanasek was able to recover to make a diving catch for the out to preserve the perfect game.

The Penmen got Maloof all the offense she would need in the top of the first, plating five runs keyed by a bases loaded double from Stanasek to drive home three runs and complete the scoring in the frame. Sothern New Hampshire extended the lead in the second when Maloof tripled home a run to make it 7-0. SNHU would score two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to create the final score.

Both squads have league doubleheaders on tap for tomorrow. Saint Rose is set to welcome Saint Anselm to Albany for a 12:15 pm start, while Southern New Hampshire heads to Le Moyne College for a 12:30 pm matinee.
