SAINT ROSE COMEBACKS FALL SHORT AGAINST ASSUMPTION

The College of Saint Rose softball team donned pink jerseys for Cancer Awareness Day at the Plumeri Sports Complen on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALBANY, NY – The College of Saint Rose softball team saw a pair of seventh inning rallies come up short as the Golden Knights fell in a pair of games against Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption at Cathy Cummings Haker Field. Saint Rose dropped the first game 7-4 prior to falling 2-1 in game two.

In game one the Golden Knights fell behind in the top of the first as Assumption saw their first four batters of the game on base. After back-to-back walks started things off for the Greyhounds, junior Lauren Medeiros and sophomore Nikki Boris followed with consecutive RBI singles to put Assumption up 2-0.

The score would remain that way until the top of the fourth inning as the Greyhounds led off the frame with three straight singles to load the bases. Senior Courtney Galuski was able to get the first out of the inning with a strikeout. Saint Rose looked poised to get out of the inning as Assumption catcher, freshman Andrea Crowley, grounded a ball to shortstop, but the play was bobbled, allowing everyone to advance a base and score freshman Jess DiPilato and making it 3-0 Greyhounds. After a groundout to third recorded the second out of the inning, junior Melissa Jalbert homered to left to clear the bases and push the Assumption lead to 7-0.

The Golden Knights would get on the board in the bottom half of the frame as sophomore Olivia Reeves drove a homerun to the left of the scoreboard in left-centerfield, making the score 7-1. For Reeves, it was her Northeast-10 Conference leading seventh homer of the season.

Reeves would make her presence known again in the sixth inning. After a single by freshman Marisa Bird with one out, Reeves drove out her second homer of the game and eighth of the season, a towering shot down the leftfield line, to cut the lead to 7-3.

Saint Rose continued to battle as freshman Anna Carey led off the bottom of the seventh with her first collegiate homerun, a deep drive off the screen beyond the leftfield fence to pull the Golden Knights to within three at 7-4. That was as close as Saint Rose would get, however, as senior Jennifer Lowery retired the final two batters of the game to finish off her eight complete game of the season, improving her record to 4-4. Senior Sarah Arbogast suffered the loss for the Golden Knights.

Game two developed into a pitcher's duel early on between Saint Rose freshman Lauren Sputo and Assumption senior Chelsea Durso. Through the first five innings, the only marks in the runs column on the scoreboard were a pair of solo homers from the Greyhounds' DiPilato and senior Marissa Palumbo. Arbogast came on in relief with one out in the fifth inning for Sputo and continued to keep the zeroes on the scoreboard holding Assumption scoreless for the remaining 2.2 innings.

Saint Rose would scratch across a run in the seventh as pinch-hitter, junior Stephanie Luce singled. Two batters later, Carey walked. Arbogast came up and singled down the leftfield line, scoring senior Kayla Kuilema, who was pinch-running for Luce, cutting the Greyhounds lead to 2-1. That was where the score would stay, however, as Durso was able to get a groundout for the final out of the game.

Durso (3-2) earned the win for Assumption while Sputo (2-8) took the tough luck loss for the Golden Knights.

Both clubs are idle until Wednesday afternoon when they resume their league schedules. Saint Rose heads to Southern Connecticut State University, while Assumption plays host to the University of New Haven. Both contests will start at 3:00 pm
