Box Score 2 ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose opened its 2012 home slate with a pair of non-conference victories over visiting Post University this afternoon at Cathy Cummings Haker Field. The Golden Knights belted two home runs on the way to a 5-4 win in the opener and then rallied from a three-run deficit in their final at-bat to walk away with a 7-6 triumph in game two.
Both contests featured spectacular endings. Junior infielder
Rachel Reed and freshman catcher
Alexis Williams each smacked home runs for Saint Rose (4-9) in the opener. Williams lifted a solo shot over the left field wall in the second inning that gave the Golden Knights a 3-1 cushion. Reed then provided some breathing room with a two-run blast in the sixth that made it a 5-2 ballgame.
The Eagles (1-11) did not go quietly despite stranding 11 runners in the contest. Sophomore infielders Stephanie DeMartino and Casey Sclafani got things going with back-to-back singles and then classmate Christina Udris reached on an error to load the bases for the third time in the game. Everybody moved up a base on a fielder's choice to make it a 5-3 affair.
Saint Rose freshman right-hander
Anna Carey came out of the bullpen to finish things. Carey induced a ground ball that cut down Sclafani at the plate. Senior infielder Samantha Pagano smacked an RBI single up the middle that was stabbed by senior infielder
Kayla Kuilema. Kuilema got to her feet and gunned down senior infielder Kim Bentson at the plate to halt the Eagles' comeback bid.
Sophomore outfielder
Amber Loussedes and freshman infielder
Marisa Bird each went 2-for-3 to pace the Golden Knights. DeMartino picked up a pair of base hits for Post, which had eight different players find the hit column.
In game two, the Eagles built a 6-3 lead after six and a half, but Saint Rose refused to go away. Senior infielder
Lindsey David singled and Bird followed with one of her own. That set the stage for Reed, who delivered her second home run of the afternoon that subsequently knotted things 6-6.
The Golden Knights put even more pressure on when sophomore outfielder
Olivia Reeves tripled to center field. Senior infielder
Jessica Butterbrodt removed all doubt about the final outcome with a blooper down the left field line to seal things.
Bird and Reeves each wound up 3-for-4 for Saint Rose, which finished one shy of its season-high with 11 hits. Udris ended up 2-for-4 for Post.
Saint Rose resumes its Northeast-10 Conference slate Tuesday afternoon with a twin-bill at Pace University. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:00 pm in Pleasantville. Meanwhile, Post opens its 2012 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) campaign at home Sunday against Philadelphia University. The opener will begin at 1:00 pm.
