Senior guard
Ashley Rath and junior forward
Maria Sanchez Gonzalez led the Golden Knights (14-7/11-6 NE-10). The latter recorded her second “double-double” of the year behind 10 points and a season-best 18 rebounds, while Rath tossed in a game-high 28 points via 9-for-15 shooting from the floor. Furthermore, senior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe tossed in 17 points.
As for the Owls (17-4/14-3 NE-10); who arrived tied with Bentley for the
Northeast-10 Conference lead, senior guard Sylvonya Moore, junior forward Keisha Primo, and freshman guard Mariah Hankton scored 14 points each; and junior guard Camille Fantini added 11.
The Golden Knights closed the last eight minutes of the first half with an 18-11 run that transformed a nine point, 28-19, ballgame into a two point, 39-37, Saint Rose deficit at the break.
It remained a one possession ballgame during the opening six minutes of the second stanza when Rath knocked down a 3-pointer that triggered the Golden Knights' decisive 11-1 jaunt. Rath subsequently capped it with a pair of free throws that made it 58-50 Saint Rose with 9:13 remaining.
The Owls refused to go quietly though and were within four on three occasions throughout the ensuing six minutes. They then got to within a bucket after sophomore center Moni Smith-Ocran finished in the paint and Primo went 1-for-2 from the foul line to make it a 67-65 ballgame with 38 seconds remaining.
However, Sanchez went 1-for-2 from the line after being immediately fouled while hauling in Primo's miss and then junior forward
Emily Trapp canned a pair. Sanchez added another in the final 10 seconds while Southern Connecticut State came up empty on its final two possessions to allow the Golden Knights to run their record to 10-1 at home this season.
Looking ahead, both teams return to conference action with 5:30 pm games Wednesday. The Golden Knights will host Adelphi for “Athletic Achievement Night”, while the Owls will head to Pleasantville to take on Pace University.
