CAREER-HIGH FROM GUTIERREZ NOT ENOUGH TO PROPEL SAINT ROSE

Senior guard Rob Gutierrez poured in a career-high 29 points to lead Saint Rose
Box Score ALBANY – Senior guard Rob Gutierrez poured in a career-high 29 points, but it was not enough as visiting Southern Connecticut State University walked away with an 80-71 Northeast-10 Conference victory over The College of Saint Rose today at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Owls have now taken three of the past four meetings against the Golden Knights over the past two seasons.

Gutierrez hit 10-of-17 shots from the floor and also hauled in nine rebounds in a workmanlike 39 minutes of action for Saint Rose (4-17/4-13 NE-10). Senior forward Brian Hanuschak secured his 19th career “double-double” via 16 points and 14 boards. Hanuschak furthermore moved past Shanty Robinson ('09) into seventh place on the school's all-time rebounding chart (696).

Freshman guard Tylon Smith was one of three players in twin-figures for Southern (10-11/8-9 NE-10). Smith filled up the box score to the tune of 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Junior forward Trevon Hamlet tossed in 16 points, while sophomore guard Greg Langston added 10 points.

The Owls, who entered the game with the second-highest scoring offense in the NE-10, shot 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from the floor throughout the final 20 minutes to maintain its seven-point cushion at the break. Smith triggered a decisive 17-8 run that gave Southern its largest lead of the game, 62-47, with 8:21 to play.

The Owls preserved a double-digit lead until sophomore guard Kareem Thomas went 1-for-2 from the foul line to cut the Golden Knights' deficit to 75-66. Sophomore guard Dominique Langston finished off a conventional 3-point play at the other end, but Gutierrez answered with a deep ball. Junior guard Andre Pope then hit a jumper off the dribble to pull Saint Rose to within 78-71 with 36 seconds left, thus providing one last breath. However, Southern senior guard Chris Harris hit a pair at the charity stripe and the Golden Knights came up empty on their next two trips to seal their fate.

Today also marked the annual NABC Coaches vs. Cancer game with the College donating all paid admissions, along with a matching gift from the College, to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Camp Bravehearts that totaled more than $3,000.

Looking ahead, both teams return to conference action with 7:30 pm games Wednesday. The Golden Knights will host Adelphi for “Athletic Achievement Night”, while the Owls head to Pleasantville to take on Pace University.
