The Plot: Saint Rose and Southern Connecticut State both come into this afternoon looking to post back-to-back wins.
Last Time Out: Saint Rose outscored host Le Moyne 17-9 over the last eight minutes to walk away with a 67-58 victory Tuesday night at Ted Grant Court. The Golden Knights also clinched the inaugural
“Upstate Challenge” by picking up half a point following a split of the regular-season series between the two clubs.
Sophomore guard
Kareem Thomas led a balanced attack that featured three Saint Rose players in double-figures. Thomas tied his career-high with 20 points via 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. Senior forward
Brian Hanuschak wound up with 17 points and nine boards, while fellow senior forward
Sheldon Griffin added 13 points.
Le Moyne also had three players reach twin-digits including by sophomore guard Nate Champion and sophomore center Jim Janson. The duo tossed in 16 points apiece, while junior guard Gamal Mohamed contributed 11 points.
Last Meeting: Saint Rose endured an untimely five-minute drought without a field goal and host Southern Connecticut State took advantage by upending the Golden Knights 86-74 back on November 27 at Moore Fieldhouse.
Senior guard
Rob Gutierrez and Griffin led the way for the Golden Knights. Gutierrez paced all scorers with 19 points, while Griffin finished one board shy of a “double-double” with 17 points and nine caroms. Furthermore, sophomore center
Dominykas Milka recorded his first career double-dip with 13 points and 11 boards in 23 minutes off the bench.
Junior forward Trevon Hamlet and sophomore guard Greg Langston led four players in double-figures for Southern Connecticut. The duo collected 17 points apiece.
The Series: Saint Rose owns a 20-7 lead in the series that dates back to the 1993 ECAC Tournament. The Owls have won two of the past three during the last two seasons. However, the Golden Knights had come out on top on 14 straight occasions prior to that time frame.
Scouting Saint Rose (4-16/4-12 NE-10): The Golden Knights Knights play five of their last six regular-season games at home…Saint Rose shot a season-high 50.0 percent (6-for-12) from the arc on Tuesday…Hanuschak and Pope are 21 and 37 points away respectively from becoming the 26th and 27th players in program history to score 1,000 career points…In case you're counting, the 68-66 setback to UMass Lowell (1/25/12) marked the team's 10th loss this season by five points or less…Gutierrez leads four double-figure scorers at 12.3 points per-game…He is also tied for seventh in the league at 1.8 steals per-outing...Milka is averaging 11.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in 22.4 minutes of reserve duty, while Hanuschak and Pope are averaging 11.1 ppg and 11.0 ppg respectively…The latter also hauls in a team-leading 6.0 boards on a regular basis and is shooting a league-best 62.2 percent (92-for-148) from the floor...He furthermore became just the fourth player in school annals to register 100 career blocks on Tuesday.
Scouting Southern Connecticut State (9-11/7-9 NE-10): The Owls snapped a three-game skid with Tuesday's 82-65 victory at Assumption…They are also averaging a league-leading 39.6 rebounds, although they give up 40.2 on a regular basis…Sophomore swing Greg Langston tosses in a league-leading 17.7 points per-game…Junior forward Trevon Hamlet averages 16.7 points and 6.2 rebounds, while sophomore forward Dominique Langston fills up the box score with 12.2 points, a team-leading 6.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per-outing.
Coaches vs. Cancer: Saint Rose will once again help fight cancer by making a charitable contribution to three great causes at today's game. Saint Rose will donate the proceeds from paid admissions to the
Susan G. Komen Foundation,
The V Foundation for Cancer Research, and
Camp Bravehearts. Additionally, the College will match the dollar figure collected at the gate. The total figure will be divided equally among all three of the aforementioned charities with Saint Rose President Dr. R. Mark Sullivan presenting a check at halftime.
Up Next: Both teams return to conference action with 7:30 pm games Wednesday. The Golden Knights will host Adelphi for “Athletic Achievement Night”, while the Owls will head to Pleasantville to take on Pace University.
