SAINT ROSE PUTS AWAY NEW HAVEN 73-70

Senior guard Rob Gutierrez finished with 17 points in his final game in a Saint Rose uniform
Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose had four players reach double-figures in scoring and the Golden Knights converted almost half of their opportunities from the floor on the way to a 73-70 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the University of New Haven tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Saint Rose (7-19/7-12 NE-10) shot 49.1 percent (27-for-55) from the field and forced the Chargers into 19 turnovers to end its regular-season on a high note with back-to-back wins. Regardless, New Haven (14-12/10-12 NE-10) secured its first berth in the upcoming NE-10 Tournament that is set to get underway this Friday with first round action.

Junior guard Andre Pope led the Golden Knights in scoring for the seventh time this year with 18 points. Senior guard Rob Gutierrez was on his heels with 17 points, while sophomore forward Dominykas Milka and senior forward Sheldon Griffin added 15 and 14 points respectively.

Sophomore guard Justin Exum and Jeffery Adkins, Jr. each tossed in 15 points to pave the way for the Chargers.

It was still anybody's game after Adkins went 1-for-2 from the line to cut the Saint Rose lead to three, 51-48, with 9:12 remaining. However, the Golden Knights outscored New Haven 13-6 over the next four and a half minutes to take their largest lead of the night, 64-54.

Pope was the catalyst. He buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key and then finished in the paint to get things started. Griffin provided a major spark when he slammed home a lob from Gutierrez. Pope then fed Gutierrez on a fast break before capping things with another trey that afforded Saint Rose a 10-point cushion with 4:45 to play.

The Golden Knights still led 67-57 after Milka connected with Pope on a backdoor cut. The Chargers made things interesting down the stretch and actually got to within a pair, 69-67, after a layup from Adkins with 27 seconds on the clock. Saint Rose made pay dirt at the stripe in the waning moments thanks to Gutierrez and Griffin, who each hit a pair.

Gutierrez, Griffin and senior forward Brian Hanuschak each concluded their splendid playing careers in a Golden Knights uniform this evening. Gutierrez is 24th all-time in school annals in points (1,112), Griffin made more than 100 appearances and Hanuschak is one of only seven players in program history to record more than 1,000 points (1,038) and 700 rebounds (724).
