The Plot: The College of Saint Rose welcomes
Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven for its 2011-12 season finale this evening. The Golden Knights are aiming to wrap up their year on a high note, while the Chargers are looking to lock up an NE-10 Tournament berth in a tight race to the finish.
Last Time Out: Saint Rose celebrated “Senior Day” by hanging on to a 56-52 victory against visiting conference rival American International Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights held the Yellow Jackets to 37.3 percent (19-for-51) shooting from the floor and outrebounded their guests by a 37-28 margin, including a 9-5 advantage from the offensive glass that led to a 13-0 differential in second chance points.
Sophomore guard
Kareem Thomas went 7-for-11 from the floor on the way to a game-high 16 points and senior forward
Sheldon Griffin tossed in 15 points and tied his season-high with nine rebounds to pace Saint Rose. Senior guard
Rob Gutierrez added 10 points and eight boards.
Meanwhile, sophomore guard Spencer Braithwaite and sophomore forward David Campbell scored 14 points apiece, and sophomore guards Janek Schmidkunz and D.J. Gutridge wound up with 11 and 10 respectively to lead American International.
Last Meeting: Saint Rose was outscored 14-7 in overtime during an 80-73 setback at New Haven back on November 16 in what marked the league opener for both teams. The Golden Knights shot 50.9 percent (29-for-67) from the floor, but just 27.3 percent (3-for-11) from the arc and 57.1 percent (12-for-21) from the line.
Gutierrez finished with 18 points and five rebounds and senior forward
Brian Hanuschak wound up with 17 points and five boards to pace Saint Rose, which had four players in double-figures scoring.
The game featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes although the Chargers never trailed in the extra session. Previously, the game was close throughout as the Golden Knights went into the locker room up one, 30-29, at the break. It then pretty much remained a one possession ballgame throughout the second half.
Junior guard
Andre Pope wound up with 16 points and sophomore center
Dominykas Milka had 10 points in 26 minutes off the bench to help the Saint Rose cause. Furthermore, sophomore guard
James Wilson hauled in a career-high nine boards to go with five assists.
For the Chargers, sophomore guards Justin Exum and Jeffery Adkins, Jr. scored 21 and 17 points respectively, and freshman forward Eric Anderson tossed in 15.
The Series: The Golden Knights leads the series that dates back to the 2001-02 campaign 5-3. Saint Rose had won four straight against the Chargers until November's overtime setback in West Haven, CT.
Scouting Saint Rose (6-19/6-15 NE-10): Gutierrez, Hanuschak and Pope have now all reached the 1,000 point plateau…Three current players certainly stands out, although the 1996-97 Saint Rose team had five 1,000 point scorers…Gutierrez leads four players in double-figures scoring at 12.0 points per-game to go along with 1.6 steals per-outing, the 12th highest mark in the NE-10…Milka follows with 11.8 ppg to go along with 5.9 rebounds throughout 22.2 minutes off the bench…Hanuschak and Pope are averaging 11.0 ppg and 10.3 ppg respectively…Hanuschak also hauls in a team-leading 6.4 boards on a regular basis and is shooting a league-best 60.8 percent (113-for-186) from the floor...Pope's 3.4 apg put him 11th among the NE-10 leaders...Additionally, Hanuschak is one of only seven players in program annals to record more than 1,000 points and 700 rebounds.
Scouting New Haven (14-11/10-11 NE-10): The Chargers, who do not have a senior listed on their roster, come into tonight on the cusp of the final NE-10 Tournament spot along with Assumption and Saint Anselm who all have identical league records…The Chargers have dropped six of their last seven, including two straight…Nevertheless, they are 7-5 on the road this year…Exum is averaging a team-leading 14.6 ppg thanks in part to 34.8 percent (63-for-181) shooting from the arc…Adkins, Jr. produces 10.0 points and 3.5 assists on a regular basis, while freshman guard/forward Eric Anderson can be counted upon for 9.2 points and 7.7 rebounds nightly…The latter places him fourth among the league leaders.
