The Plot: Saint Rose is trying to complete the season sweep on Senior Day, while the Yellow Jackets are attempting to chalk up back-to-back road wins.
Last Time Out: Saint Rose erased an 11-point second half deficit, but came up empty on its final two possessions that allowed visiting
Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption to walk away with Tuesday's 60-55 victory against the Golden Knights.
Saint Rose shot a season-low 27.4 percent (17-for-62) from the floor. The Golden Knights were furthermore held without a field goal over the final 4:10 as the Greyhounds scored the game's final five points to escape after they built an 11-point cushion with 12:53 to play.
Sophomore forward
Dominykas Milka recorded his fourth “double-double” of the year on the strength of 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead Saint Rose. Senior forward
Brian Hanuschak added 14 points and eight caroms. Additionally, junior guard
Andre Pope became the 27th player in school annals to record 1,000 career points after finishing with 10.
Assumption had three players in twin-figures as well. Senior guard Kevin Donahue ended up with 18 points. Junior forward Ronson Quick was right behind him with 17 points, while junior forward Tim Beinert had a “double-double” of his own via 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Last Meeting: Saint Rose opened up an 18-7 lead throughout the opening 15 minutes and never looked back en route to a 65-41 victory at American International back on December 11. The Golden Knights generated 20 points off of 24 turnovers by the Yellow Jackets, coughed it up just 11 times themselves, and held their hosts to 28.8 percent (15-for-52) shooting.
Senior guard
Rob Gutierrez paced four Saint Rose players in double-figures with 19 points. Gutierrez went 8-for-13 from the floor and also tied his career-high with five assists to go along with two steals. Senior forward
Sheldon Griffin wound up with 11 points and six boards, while sophomore guard
Kareem Thomas and Milka were big factors off the bench. Thomas had 13 points, five boards and four assists; while Milka contributed 10 points and six caroms.
For American International, sophomore guard Janek Schmidkuntz tossed in nine points behind a 3-for-9 shooting effort from the arc.
The Series: Saint Rose has won five of the last seven meetings with American International.
Scouting Saint Rose (5-19/5-15 NE-10): The Golden Knights close out the regular-season with the second of three straight home games today…Gutierrez, Hanuschak and Pope have now all reached the 1,000 point plateau…Three current players certainly stands out, although the 1996-97 Saint Rose team had five 1,000 point scorers…Milka leads four double-figure scorers at 12.2 points per-game to go along with 6.0 rebounds throughout 22.5 minutes off the bench…Gutierrez follows at 12.1 ppg…Hanuschak and Pope are averaging 11.1 ppg and 10.7 ppg respectively…Hanuschak also hauls in a team-leading 6.4 boards on a regular basis and is shooting a league-best 60.9 percent (109-for-179) from the floor...Additionally, Hanuschak is one of only seven players in program annals to record more than 1,000 points and 700 rebounds.
Senior Day: Hanuschak, Griffin and Gutierrez will be honored today during a brief pregame ceremony to commemorate their careers in a Golden Knights uniform.
Scouting American Int'l (8-16/6-14 NE-10): The Yellow Jackets have won two of their last three following Tuesday's 64-57 triumph at New Haven…Sophomore guard Spencer Braithwaite and Schmidkunz pace the team's scoring parade…Braithwaite is scoring at a 13.1 ppg clip and also hands out a team-leading 3.3 assists on a regular basis…Schmidkunz is averaging 10.2 points thanks in part to 42.9 percent (66-for-154) shooting from the arc.
Up Next: Both squads will wrap-up their 2011-12 campaigns with 7:30 pm conference dates on Tuesday. The Golden Knights will entertain New Haven, while the Yellow Jackets will host Assumption.
