Northeast-10 Conference encounter today at the Goldstein Athletic Center.
The Setters (13-10/11-8 NE-10) scored the game's first 18 points, took off on a 16-2 run in the opening two minutes of the second half to go back up by 14, 48-34, with 10:22 remaining, and furthermore went 16-for-18 from the charity stripe throughout the final 20 minutes to seal their fourth consecutive victory.
The Golden Knights (5-18/5-14 NE-10) nonetheless showed their resilience by mounting their second big comeback of the afternoon behind seven unanswered points that pulled them to within three, 57-54, after senior forward
Sheldon Griffin finished in the paint with 4:18 to go. However, Saint Rose came up empty on its next two possessions while Pace scored six straight points during the next two minutes to make it a 63-54 ballgame. The Setters then made all six of their free throws throughout three trips to the line down the stretch.
Griffin had a season-high 19 points, via 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point territory, and sophomore center
Dominykas Milka had 18 points and seven rebounds throughout 31 minutes off the bench to lead Saint Rose. Senior guard
Rob Gutierrez wound up with eight points, a career-high 11 rebounds and three assists; while junior guard
Andre Pope added 10 points.
Junior forward Keon Williams posted a “double-double” behind 21 points and 10 rebounds, including seven from the offensive glass, to lead the Setters. Sophomore guard Denzel Primus-Devonish had 12 points, seven boards and five assists; and senior guard Justin Alston added 11 points, nine rebounds and four helpers.
After the rough start, Milka scored a layup to put the Golden Knights on the board with 12:56 left until intermission. Saint Rose proceeded to outscore Pace 27-14 the rest of the way to make it a 32-29 ballgame at the break. Pope then drained a 3-pointer to open the second stanza that squared everything at 32-32. However, another decisive run by the Setters coupled with their superlative free throw shooting ultimately dictated the outcome.
Looking ahead, both squads return to the hardwood for 7:30 pm conference dates Tuesday. The Golden Knights will host Assumption for their “Golden Wave Game”, while the Setters will head to Long Island to visit Adelphi.
