ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose used a 12-point halftime advantage to secure a season-opening 69-53 victory against Mercy earlier this evening as part of the Saint Rose Tip-Off tournament presented by
Hilton Garden Inn-Albany Medical Center.
Senior guard
Andre Pope poured in a game-high 21 points, 17 in the second half, to go along with four assists and two steals while freshman forward
Tyler Sayre enjoyed a 12 point and three steal collegiate debut for the Golden Knights (1-0). Junior center
Dominykas Milka grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Saint Rose converted on 20-of-23 free throws for a 87.0 shooting percentage from the line.
For the Mavericks, four players recorded double-digits in the scoring column as senior guard Joseph Pope led with 12 points and 10 boards. Senior forward Khiry Gordon added 10 points and came up with four steals as well.
The Mavericks built a pair of six point leads in the early going. However, the Golden Knights outscored Mercy 15-2 throughout the final six minutes that turned a one point, 16-15, deficit into a 30-18 advantage at the break. The Golden Knights then led by as many as 23, 54-31, midway through the second half after freshman forward
Chris Dorgler drained a 3-pointer from the right wing.
In the first game of tonight's tournament, Saint Anselm defeated Concordia 101-84.
Tomorrow, all four teams will be in action to conclude the weekend. Mercy will play Saint Anselm to get the day started at 2:00 pm followed by Saint Rose and Concordia at 4:00 pm.
