Box Score NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The College Saint Rose held off a late Merrimack charge and put four players in double-figures scoring for the second time this year en route to a 68-62 victory at
Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack this evening. The Golden Knights generated 18 points off of 21 turnovers by the Warriors and led throughout the final 38 minutes.
Saint Rose (10-6/7-5 NE-10) scored seven unanswered points during the opening two and a half minutes of the second period that transformed a 36-31 lead at the break into a 43-31 cushion. Merrimack (3-12/2-10 NE-10) refused to go away though and was within a bucket on two occasions during the final five minutes.
Junior forward
Maria Sanchez Gonzalez answered with a jumper from the left corner that made it a two possession game, 65-60, with 59 seconds remaining and then freshman guard
Gabie Polce sealed it by going three-for-four from the foul line in the final 30 seconds.
Polce wound up with season-highs of 17 points and nine assists, with only one turnover, to pace the Golden Knights. Sanchez also had a season-best of 12 points to go along with eight rebounds; while senior guards
Ashley Rath and
Ola Shajuyigbe added 13 and 10 points respectively.
Junior forward Kelly Schatzlein recorded a “double-double” with 22 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Warriors. Freshman guard Chloe Rothman finished with 16 points and six assists, while senior guard Gennifer Roy added 13 points and six boards.
Looking ahead, both squads return to the hardwood for 1:30 pm conference dates Saturday. The Golden Knights will host Saint Michael's, while the Warriors will head to Springfield to take on American International.
