WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose stranded five runners in scoring position throughout the seventh and eighth innings that allowed host New Haven to defeat the Golden Knights 3-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action today at Frank Vieira Field.
Senior right fielder
Garret Keenan went 3-for-4 to extend his current hitting streak to seven games and senior first baseman
Grant Smith finished 2-for-4 to lead the Golden Knights (16-29/8-15 NE-10). Senior left-hander
David Batchelder suffered the tough-luck loss. Batchelder allowed seven hits and fanned five over the distance.
Saint Rose had its best chance in the eighth when three consecutive two-out, infield base hits loaded the bases. However, New Haven junior right-hander Eric Peck came up with a strikeout to thwart the Golden Knights threat.
Saint Rose scored its lone run in the fifth that cut its 2-0 deficit in half after Smith and freshman left fielder
Brian Maynard belted back-to-back doubles.
The Chargers (25-15/13-10 NE-10) scored two runs in the third via an infield RBI base hit by junior shortstop Ryan Brockett and a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore catcher Shane O'Connell. New Haven then boosted its advantage back to a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth when O'Connell came through with a two-out, RBI single to left.
Brockett and senior third baseman Tom Rombilus both finished 2-for-4 with a run scored to pace New Haven. Senior right-hander Alex Smith scattered six hits and fanned seven, without issuing a walk, to improve to 3-3 on the year.
Looking ahead, the teams are scheduled to conclude their two-game season series Thursday at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
