ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose opened up a 7-0 lead after three innings and never looked back on the way to a 9-4 victory against Northeast-10 Conference rival American International this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Senior center fielder
Ryan Price and sophomore left fielder
Caleb Gleason had three hits each, while senior first baseman
Grant Smith and senior second baseman
Ryan Burke finished with two apiece to lead the Golden Knights (14-22/7-12 NE-10).
On the mound, senior left-hander
David Batchelder allowed four runs on eight hits throughout 6.0 innings of work and stranded a pair of American International (14-20/8-11 NE-10) runners in the first and three more in the second to keep the early Saint Rose lead secure. Sophomore right-hander
Jordan Zareski then came out of the bullpen and hurled 3.0 innings of no-hit ball to pick up his second career save, and first of the year.
The Golden Knights struck early and often with three runs in the first and four more in the third. Smith bounced a two-run double down the left field line and freshman third baseman
Jevonte Osterhout added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 Saint Rose.
Osterhout came through again in the third with an RBI single to left field. An American International error followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior shortstop
Jesse Burba, along with an RBI base hit by Burke and another Yellow Jackets miscue led to three unearned runs and a 7-0 Golden Knights advantage.
American International got on the board in the fourth when junior center fielder Mike Tranghese launched a two-out, two-run homer over the left field fence. Saint Rose got one back in the bottom half of the frame as Osterhout drove home his third run with his second sacrifice fly of the afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets then made it an 8-4 affair in the sixth by mounting a two-out rally. Freshman third baseman Cam MacDonald belted an RBI double to deep center and scored himself two batters later on a base hit by senior catcher Anthony Arrichiello, who finished 2-for-4 for American International.
The Golden Knights closed out the scoring in the eighth when Price came across on a Gleason double and a Yellow Jackets throwing error.
Looking ahead, the two teams are scheduled to conclude their two-game season series Thursday at American International. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm in Springfield.
