WORCESTER, MA – The College of Saint Rose baseball team allowed a three-run edge to evaporate in the opener that allowed host Assumption College to register a key 9-8 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Golden Knights at Rochleau Field. The Greyhounds erupted for 20 hits in game two en route to a 16-7 triumph that was played as a non-league contest.
Assumption (9-22/4-10 NE-10) scratched out a run in each of its last four at-bats to complete its rally in the opener. Sophomore second baseman Shane Keddy reached on a fielder's choice in the eighth, which brought up senior left fielder Wally Derosier with two outs. Derosier took advantage of a costly Saint Rose throwing error that brought home Keddy with the go-ahead run.
In the ninth, freshman third baseman
Jevonte Osterhout afforded the Golden Knights one last breath with a two-out single to center field. However, Assumption sophomore right-hander Matt Metcalf recorded his fifth strikeout to halt any threat of a Saint Rose comeback.
Metcalf worked 4.2 innings out of the bullpen for the Greyhounds. He did not allow a run and surrendered just three hits to pick up his first victory of the season.
The Golden Knights (12-21/6-11 NE-10) appeared to be in the driver's seat at the midway point. Senior second baseman
Ryan Burke stroked an RBI single in the fourth and then came around to score on a double by senior center fielder
Ryan Price. Osterhout then provided an 8-5 advantage via a two-run blast in the fifth.
Osterhout and Price each went 3-for-5 and scored two runs apiece to lead the way for Saint Rose. Junior catcher Tim Quinn was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs to pace Assumption.
The Greyhounds raced out to an 11-2 lead after three innings and never looked back to take game two. Six different players recorded multiple-hits in the contest for Assumption. Senior right fielder Mike Foley and senior designated hitter Drew Dombrowski each went 4-for-5 and knocked in a combined seven runs.
Osterhout homered again for the Golden Knights on the way to a 1-for-3 effort. Meanwhile, senior first baseman
Grant Smith finished 3-for-5 with a solo shot of his own and sophomore catcher #A.J. Capone# wound up 3-for-5 with two runs.
The two squads are scheduled to meet again Wednesday afternoon in Albany. Game one is an NE-10 contest slated for a 3:30 pm start, while the nightcap will again be a non-league encounter. Prior to that, Assumption will head to American International College for a 3:30 pm league game on Tuesday.
