SAINT ROSE CHALKS UP FIRST WIN OF 2011

Sophomore catcher A.J. Capone had a two-run base hit to help spearhead a seven-run third inning against Bloomfield today.
LANTANA, FL – The College of Saint Rose pushed across seven runs in the third inning to chalk up its first victory of the season with a 7-1, rain-shortened triumph versus Bloomfield today at the Palm Beach Challenge. In the process, the Golden Knights avenged Wednesday's 11-5 season-opening setback to the Deacons and overcame a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Felician earlier in the day.

Senior right fielder Garret Keenan did most of the damage for Saint Rose with a three-run triple in the third. Junior Daniel Marshall had an RBI double and sophomore catcher #A.J. Capone# added a two-run base hit to help highlight the inning.

Marshall wound up 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, while freshman center fielder Brian Maynard finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, a double, and a stolen base.

In today's meeting with Felician, freshman second baseman Colin Martindale drove a one out base hit to center field that brought across freshman third baseman Ryan Drew with the winning run for the Golden Falcons.

Saint Rose initially jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Keenan stroked a two-out single to center that scored junior shortstop Jesse Burba from second base.

However, Felician answered with two runs in the home half of the second. The Golden Knights then drew even in the eighth when freshman designated hitter Nikko Wahl reached via a leadoff infield base hit and then scored on a Burba groundout to short.

Burba, Keenan and Wahl wound up with two hits apiece to lead the Golden Knights offense, while eight different players had one hit each to lead a balanced Felician attack. Senior right-hander Joel Sanchez fanned 11 without allowing a walk over the distance to run his record to 3-0 on the year. Junior right-hander Richard Egloff gave up four hits and struck out four throughout 7.0 innings of work for the Golden Knights.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose continues its stay at the Palm Beach Challenge with a 2:00 pm game versus University of the Sciences, Philadelphia tomorrow. Felician will also face the Devils on Monday while Bloomfield has a 10:00 am date tomorrow with Wilmington at Lynn University in Boca Raton.
