Box Score WORCESTER, MA – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team led host Assumption College for more than 35 minutes, but the Greyhounds got a late 3-pointer and some key free throws down the stretch to rally for a 60-55 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Golden Knights tonight at Laska Gymnasium. It was the fifth time this year Saint Rose was defeated by five points or less.
Senior guard
Rob Gutierrez was one of three players in double-figures for the Golden Knights (0-8/0-6 NE-10) with 16 points. Sophomore forward
Dominykas Milka contributed 13 points in 21 minutes of reserve duty, while senior forward
Brian Hanuschak had 11 points despite battling foul trouble.
Senior guard Kevin Donahue paved the way for Assumption (5-3/4-2 NE-10) with 22 points via 8-of-13 shooting. Junior forward Tim Beinert finished one board shy of a “double-double” with 12 points and nine caroms as well.
Saint Rose got out of the gates quickly and built a 13 point, 24-11, margin midway through the first half. Senior forward
Sheldon Griffin knocked down a 3-pointer and then Milka finished things off with a jumper at the 10:39 mark following a steal by Gutierrez. The Greyhounds responded with an 11-2 spurt of their own over the next three minutes, but the Golden Knights did not allow a field goal the rest of the way to take a 29-22 lead at intermission.
Assumption got to within a pair again at the midway point of the second period, although Saint Rose remained in control and still led by nine, 50-41, with 7:23 to go. Milka wrapped a layup and a pair of free throws around a jumper by sophomore guard
James Wilson after Beinert finished in the paint to close the gap for the Greyhounds.
Sophomore guard Cory Schmidt sparked the final push for Assumption with a long ball in what turned into a 14-5 outburst to tie things 55-55 with 1:49 to play. Beinert fed Schmidt for another 3-pointer that got the Greyhounds back to even. The Golden Knights came up empty on their final five possessions as opposed to Assumption, which went 3-for-4 from the stripe following Donahue's go-ahead layup with 1:26 remaining.
Saint Rose gets back to the hardwood this Sunday when the Golden Knights head to American International College for a 1:30 pm tip-off in Springfield. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds have 11 days to prepare for a road trip to Pace University on Saturday, December 17. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
