NEW HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team endured an untimely five-minute drought without a field goal and host Southern Connecticut State University took advantage by upending the Golden Knights 86-74 in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up today at Moore Fieldhouse. The Owls have now won two of their last three, while Saint Rose is still in search of its first win of the 2011-12 campaign.
Senior guard
Rob Gutierrez and senior forward
Sheldon Griffin led the way for the Golden Knights (0-5/0-3 NE-10). Gutierrez led all scorers with 19 points, while Griffin finished one board shy of a “double-double” with 17 points and nine caroms. Furthermore, sophomore center
Dominykas Milka recorded his first career double-dip with 13 points and 11 boards in 23 minutes off the bench.
Junior forward Trevon Hamlet and sophomore guard Greg Langston led four players in double-figures for Southern Connecticut. The duo collected 17 points apiece.
Saint Rose trailed by three, 67-64, after Gutierrez converted a layup with 6:15 to go. However, the Golden Knights missed their next four shot attempts and coughed up the ball twice, which allowed the Owls to complete a 10-2 run that afforded them a 77-66 cushion with 1:35 left. Griffin finally silenced the drought with a 3-pointer to cut the Saint Rose deficit to eight, but Southern Connecticut went 7-for-8 from the line over the final minute to put things away.
The Owls (3-2/2-1 NE-10) shot a blistering 54.3 percent (19-for-35) from the floor in the second half. They also took advantage of 23 turnovers by the Golden Knights that led to 26 points in the contest.
Looking ahead, both squads return to league action Wednesday evening. Saint Rose heads to Adelphi University, while Southern Connecticut is scheduled to host Pace University. Both contests are set to begin at 7:30 pm.
