ALBANY –The College of Saint Rose overcame 20 turnovers by holding visiting Le Moyne to 26.2 percent (16-for-61) shooting en route to a 54-44 victory against
Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (4-0/2-0 NE-10) thus extended their unblemished record to four games for the second time in the past four campaigns.
In the process, Saint Rose earned another point to take a 7-2 lead in the year-long Upstate Challenge between the two schools.
Senior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe paced the Golden Knights by scoring 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor in just 28 minutes and fellow senior guard
Ashley Rath tossed in 16 points as the duo accounted for nearly 65.0 percent of the team's point production. Additionally, senior center
Ali Johnson wound up with eight points and 12 rebounds, five from the offensive glass.
Meanwhile, senior forward Katie Hart was the lone Le Moyne (1-2/0-2 NE-10) player in double-figures with 10 points.
Saint Rose walked into the locker room with a 30-21 advantage at the break and withstood a 7-2 surge by the Dolphins at the onset of the second stanza that made it a 32-28 ballgame with 16:38 remaining. However, Shajuyigbe knocked down a jumper and canned a trey from the right corner to put the Golden Knights back in control, 39-30, with 12:14 showing on the clock.
The Dolphins got back to within six following a free throw from freshman forward Sadie Breen with 7:42 left. Freshman guard
Gabie Polce then completed a traditional three-point play and Shajuyigbe finished inside with 6:11 to go that put the Golden Knights up by double-digits the rest of the way.
Looking ahead, both teams have conference dates on tap Sunday. The Golden Knights have a 1:30 pm meeting at Southern Connecticut in New Haven, while Le Moyne will host Assumption at 1:00 pm in Syracuse.
