SAINT ROSE POUNDS OUT SEASON-HIGH 17 HITS TO UPEND HOST PACE UNIVERSITY 7-3

Junior designated hitter Grant Smith went 4-for-5 to lead the Golden Knights 17-hit attack in today's 7-3 win at Pace University.
PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The College of Saint Rose pounded out a season-high 17 hits en route to a 7-3 victory at Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University today. In the process, the Golden Knights (8-20/3-9 NE-10) avenged Tuesday's home 4-2 setback to the Setters (8-18/4-10 NE-10).

Eight of the nine Saint Rose batters in the starting lineup had at least one hit with junior designated hitter Grant Smith leading the way. Smith finished 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while junior right fielder Garret Keenan wound up 3-for-5.

Sophomore second baseman Michael Carbone had a pair of doubles; while senior shortstop Zachary Halloran, senior left fielder Derek Marshall, and junior third baseman Ryan Burke had two hits apiece to help the Golden Knights cause.

Saint Rose jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second, before Pace pushed across a run in the third and two more in the eight to make it a 6-3 ballgame. The Golden Knights then added another run in the ninth. The Setters eventually put two on with two down in the ninth, but sophomore right-hander Kevin Scrobola induced a fly out to end the game.

Junior southpaw David Batchelder allowed only a run on five hits and six strikeouts throughout 6.0 innings on the bump to improve to 3-2 on the season. He has now allowed only one run throughout his last four appearances covering 20.2 innings of work.

The Golden Knights put themselves in the catbird seat by virtue of their explosive second inning when Carbone, sophomore center fielder Jesse Burba, Keenan, Marshall and Smith all had RBI base hits. Meanwhile, Batchelder worked out of three bases loaded jams as the Setters ended up leaving 13 runners on base.

Senior second baseman JJ Conrad, senior first baseman Vinny Dammann, and sophomore shortstop Kyle Turnier had two hits each for Pace.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights return home Saturday for a noon doubleheader versus conference rival Merrimack at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Setters have even a quicker turnaround with a 3:30 pm non-league date at Concordia tomorrow in Bronxville.
