ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, but was held to three hits the rest of the way in a 4-2 setback to Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University today at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Saint Rose struck in the first when sophomore center fielder
Jesse Burba reached and advanced to second on a error, before junior right fielder
Garret Keenan drove him home with a base hit. Two batters later, senior designated hitter
Derek Marshall doubled to deep center field to bring Keenan across.
However, Pace tied it 2-2 an inning later when sophomore designated hitter Tyler Hart led off with a double to the gap in right-center, advanced to third on a base hit by freshman third baseman Brandon Martineson and scored via a single off the bat of sophomore right fielder Patrick Chaputian. Martineson then came around with the tying run on a ground out by senior second baseman JJ Conrad.
Both Saint Rose senior right-hander
Nate Ward and Pace freshman right-hander Brian Sundberg settled in before Pace struck for a run in the seventh.
Junior catcher Michael Rodriguez doubled to left field and scored on a base hit down the right field line by senior center fielder Chris Spatkowski. The Setters then added an unearned run in the ninth.
Sundberg, who retired 19 straight at one point, scattered five hits and allowed one earned run to improve to 3-1 on the year. Senior right-hander Frank Luongo worked a perfect ninth en route to his fourth save.
Ward surrendered three runs and fanned three during 6.2 innings of work in what marked only his fourth appearance of the season.
Looking ahead, these two teams are scheduled to meet again Thursday. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm in Pleasantville.
