BATCHELDER, MARSHALL HELP GOLDEN KNIGHTS UPEND ASSUMPTION IN OPENER TO FORGE SPLIT

Senior right fielder Derek Marshall belts the first ever Saint Rose home run at Bob Bellizzi Field.
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose generated a 5-0 lead through the first three innings on the way to a 7-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader against Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption tonight at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. However, the Greyhounds (20-18/8-11 NE-10) scored eight unanswered runs to take the “non-league” nightcap 8-4.

The Golden Knights (25-12/7-12 NE-10) received another outstanding performance from junior left-hander David Batchelder while senior right fielder Derek Marshall belted an historic home run in the first game.

Batchelder allowed a run on three hits and fanned seven throughout 8.0 innings of work to run his record to 4-2 on the year. Batchelder has now allowed only three earned runs during his last five appearances that cover 36.2 innings of work. He furthermore lowered his ERA to 2.09.

Meanwhile, Marshall smacked the first ever Saint Rose home run at Bellizzi Field with a line shot that sailed over the left field fence. He also had an RBI triple and scored three times. Sophomore second baseman Michael Carbone finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while junior first baseman Grant Smith drove in two runs as well.

Senior center fielder Derek Migrants doubled and scored the lone run for the Greyhounds.

Saint Rose pushed across three runs in the first as senior catcher John Cole stole home, Smith smacked a sacrifice fly to right and Carbone followed with a RBI single.

The Golden Knights then tacked on two more in the third thanks to Marshall's triple and an RBI base hit off the bat of Carbone. An RBI single by Smith in the fourth made it 6-0 and Marshall's round-tripper two innings later closed out the scoring for the Golden Knights.

In the finale that marked the first night game at the facility, Saint Rose scored twice in both the second and third frames to take a 4-0 lead before being held scoreless the rest of the way by the Assumption bullpen. Junior left-hander Dan Evangelista scattered three hits throughout 4.0 innings of relief to improve to 5-1 on the year. Senior right-hander Tim Dupuis then hurled 2.2 innings of no-hit ball to chalk up his ninth save.

Freshman center fielder Justin Lewis finished 2-for-4 while junior third baseman Ryan Burke drove home both Golden Knights runs in the third via a base hit to center field.

Freshman shortstop Shane Keddy stroked a three run double to the gap in left-center that brought across the tying and winning runs in the seventh. Sophomore catcher Eddie McDonald then lined a triple to right-center that scored two of the Greyhounds' three runs in the ninth.

Keddy finished 3-for-5 and junior left fielder Wally Derosier wound up 3-for-4 to lead the Assumption 16-hit attack.

Up next, the two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game season series at Assumption on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm in Worcester, MA.
