SAINT ROSE SCORES EARLY AND OFTEN IN OPENER TO EARN SPLIT AT SOUTHERN N.H.

Senior catcher John Cole went 5-for-9 with five runs scored during today's twin-bill at Southern New Hampshire.
MANCHESTER, NH – The College of Saint Rose put five runs on the board in the second inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead on the way to an 11-2 victory in the opener of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Southern New Hampshire today. However, the Penmen subsequently scored four unanswered runs to take the nightcap 4-3. The games were originally scheduled for yesterday, but were postponed until today due to rain.

Senior catcher John Cole went 5-for-9 with five runs scored on the day to lead the Golden Knights (11-24/6-12 NE-10) who tied a season-high with 17 hits in the first game.

Cole slapped a two run single through the right side and senior right fielder Derek Marshall drove home another pair with a double to the gap in right-center to account for most of the Saint Rose damage in the second. Marshall also had a sacrifice fly in the first that made it 1-0 Saint Rose.

The Golden Knights then tacked on two more in sixth to go up 8-1. After the Penmen (14-19/7-9 NE-10) got one back in the bottom half, Saint Rose added three more in the seventh. Sophomore second baseman Michael Carbone and senior designated hitter Paul Partridge had back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth, before Carbone and Marshall both added RBI base hits in the seventh.

Each Saint Rose starter had at least one hit. Marshall finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, Carbone wound up 2-for-5 with a pair RBI and Cole went 3-for-5. Sophomore shortstop Jesse Burba, sophomore left fielder Nick Alexandrovich, junior third baseman Ryan Burke and Partridge had two hits apiece as well. Junior right-hander Doug Dulin allowed only an earned run on six hits throughout 5.2 innings of work to collect the victory. Freshman right-hander Jordan Zareski gave up just one hit in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Sophomore catcher Kevin Spatkowski and junior shortstop Tim Rines finished with two hits apiece for Southern New Hampshire.

In the finale, Burba stole home and Cole came across on an error to put the Golden Knights up 2-0 in the first. Saint Rose then loaded the bases with a pair of singles and walk in the third that led to another run. However, Southern New Hampshire junior right-hander Bryant Gauthier settled in and allowed just two more hits the rest of the way to run his record to 3-1 on the year.

Cole finished 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Golden Knights, while Rines went 3-for-4 and scored the winning run on an error in the eighth for the Penmen.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose has a 3:30 pm home doubleheader Tuesday versus conference rival Assumption at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Meanwhile, Southern New Hampshire is scheduled to host NE-10 foe Franklin Pierce tomorrow at 3:30 pm.
