GOLDEN KNIGHTS RALLY IN NINTH TO UPEND 16TH RANKED ADELPHI

Sophomore shortstop Jesse Burba capped a ninth inning rally with an RBI base hit in today's 4-3 defeat of #16 Adelphi.
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose made amends for allowing a 2-1 lead to slip away in the ninth inning by scoring a pair of runs with two down in the home half en route to a 4-3 victory against Northeast-10 Conference rival and 16th ranked Adelphi University this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

Junior third baseman Ryan Burke lined a triple to deep right field that brought around freshman pinch runner Justin Lewis with the tying score. Sophomore shortstop Jesse Burba then followed with a base hit up the middle that allowed Burke to touch home with the winning run.

Sophomore second baseman Michael Carbone set the stage with a leadoff single to the left-center field gap. Carbone wound up with 3-fo-3 with a double and a triple in addition to his ninth inning base hit, while sophomore left fielder Nick Alexandrovich finished 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI to pace Saint Rose.

Meanwhile, junior David Batchelder hurled another gem for the Golden Knights (10-23/4-11 NE-10) although he did not figure in the decision.

Batchelder retired 20 of the first 22 batters he faced and wound up allowing just one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts throughout 8.0 innings of work. He has now allowed only two earned runs in his last five appearances that cover 28.2 innings. Furthermore, opponents are batting just .194 against him on the year.

Adelphi (23-9/9-5 NE-10) managed to score its two runs on only one hit in the ninth as a pair of walks and a fielder's choice put two runners in scoring position. The Panthers then tied the game courtesy of a wild pitch, before sophomore Robert Eysel stroked a pinch-hit single up the middle that scored the short lived, go-ahead run.

The Golden Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second when Carbone doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a single by senior designated hitter Paul Partridge and scored on an Alexandrovich double to right field.

The Panthers tied it at 1-1 with an unearned run in the fourth, before Saint Rose added another run in the seventh that seemingly put Batchelder in position for the win. Carbone led off with a triple to the gap in left-center and then scored two batters later when Alexandrovich laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Adelphi, which had won five straight prior to yesterday's 11-7 setback at conference rival Assumption, also benefitted from a strong pitching performance. Junior right-hander Jonathan Gonzalez allowed a mere two runs on six hits during 7.0 innings on the bump.

Looking ahead, both teams have noon conference doubleheaders on tap for Saturday. The Golden Knights will visit Southern New Hampshire in Manchester. Adelphi will also be in Manchester that afternoon with a date at Saint Anselm.
