PALM BEACH, FL – The College of Saint Rose rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take the opener 4-3 in eight innings, before suffering a 5-1 setback in the nightcap of a scheduled seven inning doubleheader against Dominican at the Palm Beach Challenge this afternoon.
Senior catcher
John Cole drove home senior outfielder
Derek Marshall with a two-out base hit in the eighth to lift the Golden Knights (3-10) past the Chargers (2-2) in the first game.
Saint Rose found itself in an early hole after Dominican manufactured three runs in the second inning. However, Cole and junior outfielder
Tom Wiener led off the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles and then moved into scoring position following a ground out to first by junior third baseman
Ryan Burke. Sophomore second baseman
Michael Carbone then came through with a two run double to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Carbone then scored the tying run when junior outfielder
Garret Keenan reached via an infield error.
In the finale, the Golden Knights pulled off a double steal in the first to get on the scoreboard after Dominican jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top half of the frame. Dominican senior southpaw Shaun Murphy settled in and proceeded to toss 6.0 innings of shutout ball.
Up next, the Golden Knights close out their spring break trip through Florida tomorrow with a 10:00 game versus Bloomfield and a 1:15 pm date with Felician in Palm Beach. Meanwhile, Dominican has a scheduled 5:00 pm meeting versus C.W. Post tomorrow in Fort Lauderdale.
