ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and never looked back in a 6-0 non-league victory over Dominican College today at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights (6-16) defeated the Chargers (7-6) for the third time this season and snapped a four-game skid in the process.

Freshman left fielder Scott Hladik led the Saint Rose attack behind a 3-for-4 effort. Meanwhile, junior third baseman Ryan Burke went 1-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore designated hitter Daniel Marshall reached base four times after walking once and being hit three times to put three runs on the board alone.

The Golden Knights furthermore received outstanding efforts on the bump. Sophomore right-handers Richard Egloff and Kevin Scrobola combined for the first shutout of the 2010 campaign by surrendering a mere two hits apiece. Egloff fanned three throughout the first 6.0 innings, while Scrobola closed things down by striking out five batters in 3.0 innings of relief.

Sophomore center fielder Xavier Bonilla and senior shortstop Tommy Maloney each went 1-for-3 to pace Dominican.

Saint Rose got things going in the second after Marshall was hit by a pitch and junior first baseman Grant Smith walked to begin the frame. Hladik then reached on a bunt single to load the bases and Burke doubled down the left field line to score a pair. Sophomore second baseman Michael Carbone added a sacrifice fly that put the Golden Knights in front 3-0.

In the third, Saint Rose senior catcher Derek Marshall singled to center, advanced to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a throwing error as he attempted to steal third base. Hladik brought around Daniel Marshall via an infield single later in the inning that gave the Golden Knights a comfortable 5-0 edge.

Both clubs are scheduled to return to action tomorrow. Saint Rose is set to host Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 Conference twin-bill beginning at noon. The Chargers also return home to Orangeburg, NY where they welcome the University of Sciences in Philadelphia for a noon doubleheader.
