SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT UPENDS SAINT ROSE TO WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT

The Golden Knights suffered their fourth straight setback against league leader Southern Connecticut State today
ALBANY – Southern Connecticut State University pounded out 15 hits for the second day in a row and remained unbeaten in league play following a 13-1 Northeast-10 Conference over The College of Saint Rose baseball team this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Owls (12-4-1/6-0 NE-10) thus earned a sweep of the regular-season series between the two clubs and won their sixth in a row.

Junior center fielder Garret Keenan went 2-for-3, stole a base and drove in the lone of the game for the Golden Knights (5-16/1-5 NE-10). Sophomore Daniel Marshall, freshman Jordan Zareski and freshman Scott Hladik all delivered pinch hit singles as well.

Southern had four players register multiple hits in the contest. Senior second baseman Greg Malen went 3-for-4 with two runs, sophomore designated hitter Eric Schlitter was 3-for-3 with a run, two RBI and a walk, while sophomore shortstop Ryan Geffert and freshman first baseman Bryan Dorsey had two hits apiece.

The Owls snapped a scoreless tie with four runs in the third on the strength of a two-run shot by Geffert. Geffert's blast bounced off the top of the wall in left center field, thus becoming the first home run in the history of the ballpark. Schlitter doubled to left three batters later to put Southern up 4-0.

The Golden Knights got one back in the bottom of the frame thanks to junior third baseman Ryan Burke. Burke drew a two-out walk, stole second and then came around to score on a single by Keenan that made it a 4-1 affair.

Southern tacked on a run of its own in the fifth and put things out of reach by scoring four times in the sixth that provided a 9-1 edge. That kind of support proved to be plenty for junior right-hander Steve Simon. Simon improved to 4-0 after surrendering just three hits and fanning five batters in 8.0 innings of work.

Saint Rose will step out of conference for a non-league game tomorrow versus Dominican College. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm at Bob Bellizzi Field. The Owls return to NE-10 action Saturday when they host Merrimack College in a league doubleheader beginning at noon.
