GOLDEN KNIGHTS DROP BOTH ENDS OF TWIN-BILL TO NEW HAVEN

Senior catcher John Cole scored the Golden Knights' run in a 2-1 setback in the opener of a doubleheader with New Haven today.
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose dropped both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against visiting New Haven at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex this afternoon. The visiting Chargers (13-2/2-0 NE-10) pushed across the winning run in the eighth to take the opener 2-1, and then rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a three-run eighth to capture the finale 4-2. In the process, New Haven ran its win streak to 11 games.

Senior shortstop Zachary Halloran went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Golden Knights (5-14/1-3 NE-10) attack in game one. Meanwhile, junior left-hander David Batchelder scattered four hits and fanned five throughout 6.0 innings of a no-decision outing and senior right-hander Paul Partridge  tossed 1.1 innings of no-hit relief.

Senior designated hitter Tom Ballaro finished 2-for-4 and senior second baseman Kyle Donnelly reached base three times for New Haven. Additionally, junior right-hander Mitch Rossi gave up just a pair of hits throughout 2.1 innings to grab the win in relief of senior right-hander Chris Smith.

New Haven snapped a scoreless tie in the seventh when Ballaro drove home sophomore right fielder Jordan Kershaw with a triple to the gap in right-center The Golden Knights tied it in the home half of the frame via a bases loaded single by Halloran that brought across senior catcher John Cole. However, the Chargers scored an unearned run in the eighth and Rossi retired the final six Saint Rose batters in order to secure the victory.

In the finale, Saint Rose jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to another RBI base hit by Halloran. The Golden Knights then made it 2-0 in the fifth when junior third baseman Ryan Burke lined a two-out double down the right field line that scored Cole.

However, New Haven answered with a run of its own in the same frame and then pushed across three more in the eighth. Freshman right-hander Taylor Candage provided the biggest blow with a two-run double to deep center field. Candage then held the Golden Knights to a hit in the ninth inning en route to his first career save.

Halloran had another 2-for-4 effort and Burke finished 2-for-3 to lead the Saint Rose offense. Junior right-hander Alex Smith improved to 3-0 on the year for New Haven. Smith allowed only an earned run and fanned nine without issuing a walk throughout 8.0 innings of work.

Up next, the Golden Knights are scheduled to visit NE-10 rival Southern Connecticut State for a 3:30 pm game in New Haven on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Chargers have a 3:00 pm conference game versus Adelphi on Tuesday.
