SAINT ROSE SPLITS A PAIR OF ONE-RUN AFFAIRS AT SAINT ANSELM

Junior lefty Jake Kozar
MANCHESTER, NH – The College of Saint Rose baseball team overcame a 5-1 deficit to walk away with a 6-5 victory at Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm College Sunday afternoon to take game one of a league doubleheader. However, the host Hawks (10-14/6-4 NE-10) dug themselves out of a 3-1 hole in the nightcap via a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th to capture a 4-3 triumph.

In the opener, the Golden Knights (9-17/5-7 NE-10) put up three runs in the sixth on the strength of a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Grant Smith to cut their deficit to one, 5-4. Prior to that, sophomore shortstop Ryan Burke scored on a passed ball.

An inning later, junior right fielder Jake Perez belted a two-run double to center field that gave Saint Rose the lead for good, 6-5. Junior Ryan Price was hit by a pitch to get things started and freshman second baseman Michael Carbone hit into a fielder's choice before scoring the game-winner.

Junior left-hander Jake Kozar worked three scoreless innings for the Golden Knights in relief of senior right-hander Nick DeMidio to pick up the win. Kozar scattered three hits and fanned three, while DeMidio allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out five in 6.0 innings of work.

In game two, Saint Rose senior right-hander Brendon Malkowski did not figure into the decision after yielding one run on five hits and fanning eight before exiting after the seventh with a 3-1 lead.

Saint Anselm generated a pair of runs in the eighth that began with a pair of walks issued to senior shortstop Ben Gunn and sophomore second baseman Steven Panza. Gunn then scored on an error and Panza was plated when freshman designated hitter Benjamin Waldrip singled to right field to knot things at 3-3.

Saint Rose left runners on base in the ninth and 10th, which allowed the Hawks an opportunity to come up with the winning run via a two-out RBI single by junior first baseman Matt Stone.

Smith finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI to pace the Golden Knights. Meanwhile, Burke drove in a run as did senior designated hitter Dominick Iaconis.

Saint Rose is scheduled to visit NE-10 newcomer New Haven at 3:30 pm Tuesday afternoon. Saint Anselm turns around tomorrow to play a 1:00 pm non-conference contest at the University of Bridgeport.
