MANCHESTER, NH – The College of Saint Rose rallied from 1-0 and 4-1 deficits to forge a pair of ties, but host Southern New Hampshire finally broke through with four runs in the eighth to hand the Golden Knights (19-24/12-14 NE-10) an 8-5 Northeast-10 Conference setback today.
Saint Rose, which had won five of six heading into the game, got a run back in the ninth; but only after the Golden Knights loaded the bases with none out and hit into their third double play of the afternoon. Saint Rose was also undone by six errors, including five in the fateful eighth.
Sophomore left fielder
Garret Keenan went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the seventh to lead the Golden Knights attack. It was Keenan's fourth round-tripper of the spring. Freshman second baseman
Michael Carbone also finished 2-for-4, while junior catcher
Derek Marshall belted his second home run of the year with a solo shot in the fifth. Furthermore, junior center fielder
Ryan Price wound up 1-for-2 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Price has batted a sizzling .567 (17-for-30) to go along with a .634 on-base percentage throughout that stretch.
As for Southern New Hampshire (14-22-1/11-14-1 NE-10), junior first baseman Robert Wronski went 2-for-5 with a two-run blast in the sixth and senior left fielder Jeff Giannino wound up 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
After being held without a hit throughut the first four innings, Marshall made it 1-1 in the fifth before the Penmen went up 4-1 in the sixth with Wronski's homer run doing most of the damage. The Golden Knights then pulled to within a run behind Keenan's homer in the seventh and a Price sacrifice fly an inning later. However, the Penmen managed to push across their four runs on only one hit in the eighth.
The two teams are scheduled to conclude their regular-season series Thursday. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm at Bleecker Stadium.
