ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose kept its recent hot streak alive with another solid pitching performance and a six run, seventh inning that allowed the Golden Knights to hand visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival American International an 8-1 setback this afternoon at Bleecker Stadium.
Saint Rose (14-19/9-9 NE-10) has now won five of its last seven, and seven of its last 10. The Golden Knights have also climbed to the .500 mark in league play and have strung together a three-game win streak for the first time all season. They furthermore have given up a mere two runs throughout their three previous contests.
Senior right-hander
Jeremiah St. Louis was the catalyst for today's victory. St. Louis held American International (6-22/4-12 NE-10) at bay by allowing a run one three hits, while fanning 12 (one shy of his career-high) throughout 8.0 innings of work. St. Louis did not allow his first hit until the fifth inning. He also set down 18 of the first 21 batters he faced.
Sophomore right-hander
Nick Polsinelli took over in the ninth and promptly retired the Yellow Jackets in order.
Offensively, junior designated hitter
Derek Marshall and junior center fielder
Ryan Price did most of the damage. Marshall went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Price finished 1-for-5 with two RBI as well. Sophomore left fielder
Garret Keenan contributed a pair of base hits.
Price provided the biggest blow in the seventh when he roped a double to the gap in right-center that snapped a 1-1 tie by bringing across sophomore shortstop
Ryan Burke and freshman second baseman
Michael Carbone. Sophomore third baseman
Grant Smith followed with a base hit to center that scored Price. Two batters later, Marshall doubled to left-center to drive in Smith and suddenly it was 5-1 Saint Rose. The Golden Knights then added another run courtesy of an American International error, before Burke lined a run scoring base hit up the middle.
Saint Rose went up 1-0 in the third when Carbone drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a botched pickoff attempt. He scored two batters later after Marshall stroked a base hit to centerfield. American International deadlocked it 1-1 in the fifth when sophomore second baseman Nicholas Devine doubled to drive in junior left fielder Dan Bassani.
The Golden Knights eventually closed out the scoring with an unearned run in the eighth.
Saint Rose has a league make-up at Stonehill College tomorrow. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm in Easton, MA. The Golden Knights then head to UMass Lowell for Saturday's noon doubleheader. Meanwhile, American International will host NE-10 foe Southern Connecticut State for a noon double-dip on Saturday.
