ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings and never looked back en route to a 9-0 victory in the finale of a doubleheader with visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill College at Bleecker Stadium this afternoon. The win came on the heels of a 6-5, 13 inning setback in the opener when the Golden Knights (12-19/7-9 NE-10) rallied from two down in the ninth to force extra innings.
Senior right-hander
Brendon Malkowski tossed 8.0 innings of shutout ball with 10 strikeouts in the nightcap to lower his ERA to 2.61 on the year. Freshman second baseman
Michael Carbone, sophomore third baseman
Grant Smith, and senior designated hitter
Derek Marshall drove in two runs apiece, while senior first baseman
Paul Partridge reached base four times and led off the seventh with his fourth home run of the spring.
Saint Rose scored an unearned run in each of the first two innings and then broke it open with a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. Carbone stroked a two run single to center in the fourth; Marshall laced a shot up the middle to plate both runs in the fifth, while an RBI base hit by Smith and a sacrifice fly from junior right fielder
Jake Perez accounted for the two runs in the sixth.
In the opener, senior left fielder Nate Weber led off the 13th with a shot over the left-center field fence to provide the eventual winning run for Stonehill (16-13/8-7 NE-10). Senior right-hander Matt Giusti allowed four earned runs on five hits throughout 8.1 innings of work, while Weber wound up 5-for-7 to pace the Skyhawks attack.
Sophomore shortstop
Ryan Burke bounced a two-out, two-run base hit up the middle to tie the ballgame 5-5 in the ninth. Burke finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, Carbone went 2-for-5 with an RBI and senior right-hander
Nick DeMidio allowed just two earned runs and fanned eight throughout 6.0 innings of work for Saint Rose.
The Golden Knights trailed 4-0 after four and 5-1 after six, before they began chipping away. Burke had an RBI base hit in the seventh to make it a 5-2 ballgame and then Carbone led off the eighth with a home run to bring Saint Rose to within a pair and set the stage for the ninth.
Both teams have league games on tap for tomorrow. Saint Rose has a 3:30 pm meeting at American International in Springfield, while Stonehill has a 3:30 pm home date versus Pace University.
