RINDGE, NH – Franklin Pierce University broke open a 6-6 ballgame with a two-out single in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh to come away with an 8-6 Northeast-10 Conference win over The College of Saint Rose baseball team this afternoon at Dr. Pappas Field in Rindge, NH.
The Golden Knights (7-14/3-5 NE-10) rallied from a 6-2 deficit after four innings when freshman second baseman
Michael Carbone scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-6 affair. Freshman right fielder
Garret Keenan dropped down a bunt single to lead things off and scored on Carbone's second double in as many at-bats prior to the Ravens' miscue.
Franklin Pierce (10-11/3-2 NE-10), which won its third straight game, wasted no time regaining the lead in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, a fly ball was mishandled at short allowing sophomore shortstop Jose Macias to advance to second. Sophomore designated hitter Derek Ingui made Saint Rose pay by lacing a single to center field that plated Macias.
The Ravens gave themselves a two-run cushion in the seventh on an RBI single from senior left fielder Ted Lerud. Saint Rose senior right-hander
Brendon Malkowski avoided any further damage by getting out of a bases loaded jam to end any further threat.
The Golden Knights were unable to mount another charge throughout their final two at-bats, but stranded eight runners in the contest.
Malkowski (1-5) went 7.0 innings on the hump for Saint Rose, fanning four along the way without issuing a walk. Carbone finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs, while Keenan, junior left fielder
Ryan Price and junior center fielder
Jake Perez added two hits apiece.
Franklin Pierce used four pitchers in the contest that racked up a combined 17 strikeouts. Graduate left-hander Steve Cadoret and sophomore right-hander Rob Nicholas proved to be the most effective, yielding one hit and striking out five throughout the final three innings combined.
Ingui and Lerud did the most damage at the plate for the Ravens. Ingui finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run, while Lerud was 3-for-4 with four RBI on the strength of a two-run shot in the first inning.
The two clubs will meet again Thursday afternoon in Albany for the final game of their regular-season series. Tomorrow, the Golden Knights step out of conference to take on Caldwell College at 3:30 pm at Bleecker Stadium.
