SAINT ROSE RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 4-3 LOSS VERSUS BENTLEY

Sophomore third baseman Grant Smith
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose baseball team brought the go ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Bentley University freshman right-hander Matt Sherman closed things with a game-ending strikeout to propel the Falcons past the Golden Knights 4-3 in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Bleecker Stadium this afternoon.

Trailing 4-1 heading into its final at-bat, Saint Rose (5-12/1-3 NE-10) loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by sophomore third baseman Grant Smith and junior catcher Derek Marshall and a walk by junior designated hitter Jake Perez. A fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly by freshman shortstop Nick Alexandrovich made it a 4-3 ballgame with the winning run walking to the plate.

However, Sherman settled in to pick up his third save of the year by fanning freshman second baseman Michael Carbone to end the game.

Saint Rose senior right-hander Brendon Malkowski went eight strong innings for the Golden Knights, allowing two earned runs on six hits to go with six strikeouts. Bentley sophomore right-hander Rob Finneran improved to 2-0 on the year after surrendering one run on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work.

Marshall and Perez each had a pair of hits to lead the Golden Knights. Junior left fielder Ryan Price pushed his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the eighth to finish 1-for-4 with a run.

Additionally, freshman shortstop Vinnie Eruzione, freshman first baseman Mark Lane and sophomore left fielder Chris Hardy had two hits apiece to pace the Falcons (9-9/1-1 NE-10).

Saint Rose returns to action next Saturday when the Golden Knights play host to Pace University in an NE-10 doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 pm at Bleecker Stadium. Bentley remains on the road Tuesday when the Falcons head to Merrimack College for a 3:30 pm league encounter.
