ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's and women's basketball teams are both scheduled to begin play in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament this weekend with automatic bids to the NCAA Division II Tournament at stake for the winner.
The Saint Rose women (18-9) are seeded seventh in the 12-team field and are scheduled to host tenth-seed Saint Michael's (14-12) at 2:00 pm Sunday. Meanwhile, the men (11-16) garnered the tenth-seed and will travel to seventh-seed Southern New Hampshire (16-11) for a 2:00 pm first round affair Saturday afternoon in Manchester, NH.
The Golden Knights are making their sixth straight appearance in the NE-10 Tournament under head coach
Karen Haag. They own an 8-6 tournament record throughout their eight-year tenure in the league, but have never met the Purple Knights in 14 previous postseason contests. Saint Rose has been on a bit of a hot streak having won nine of its last 11 games entering Sunday. Saint Michael's, which swept the regular-season series against the Golden Knights via a 68-66 win in Albany and a 64-55 triumph at home this year, has taken four straight meetings between the two clubs.
Senior center
Lauren Revesz and senior guard
Dana Brown, who were both tabbed All-Conference performers Friday, have proved to be a formidable inside-outside duo. Revesz ranks third in the league with a 17.2 scoring average, while Brown is eighth behind 15.4 points per-game. They have combined for 46.4 percent of the squad's scoring output this season and have each accumulated more than 1,000 points over their careers. Additionally, Revesz has 18 twin-figure performances in the past 19 games and Brown has reached double-digits in 24 of the club's 27 games.
Junior guard
Elizabeth Buckley is averaging 9.9 points on the strength of 46, 3-pointers. The latter is tied for the conference's 10th highest total. Senior forward
Ashley Anderson adds 7.8 points and a team-best 7.4 rebounds, while sophomore guard
Lynsey Timbrouck has run the point with 4.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists averages.
Saint Michael's, which has won three of its last four games, has three players that toss in double-figures led by junior guard Alexis Keller. Keller ranks 12th in the NE-10 with 14.2 points and is shooting 40.7 percent from the arc. Sophomore forward Logan Pintka, a local product that attended nearby Colonie High School, is contributing 11.2 points and 4.6 rebounds. In the two wins against Saint Rose this season, Keller averaged 23.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while Pintka added 17.0 points and 4.0 boards.
The Saint Rose men will enter Saturday afternoon's tilt aiming to snap a five-game skid, its longest throughout its 18-year NCAA era. The Golden Knights took the lone meeting against Southern New Hampshire this season with a 76-72 victory back on January 10 in Manchester, NH. Saint Rose is 9-8 in the NE-10 Tournament throughout the past eight years and has never lost its first game, advancing to the semifinals in 2003, 2005, 2007 and again last year.
Junior guard
Jermaine Clark, who garnered third-team All-Conference accolades on Friday, leads the Golden Knights with 15.9 points. He recently became the 23rd player in school annals to reach the 1,000 point plateau. Clark has been in double-figures scoring in 22 of 27 games thus far and has been the club's top point producer 13 times.
Freshman guard
Shea Bromirski has been in double-figures scoring in 15 of the last 21 games and is second on the club with 11.3 points in 27.1 minutes of playing time. He is shooting 43.9 percent (25-for-57) from the arc throughout 12 road contests. Additionally, junior forward
Malcolm Williams has chipped in with 9.3 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting a team-best 52.6 percent (91-for-173) from the floor.
The Penmen come into the postseason having upended #2 seed UMass Lowell 70-62 on Tuesday at home. Southern New Hampshire has now won six of its last seven, including four straight, with the lone loss coming at top-seed Bentley. The Penmen also own a 10-3 home record, their last loss coming against none other than Saint Rose.
Sophomore swing Tory Stapleton averages a team-leading 13.6 points, while junior swing Stephen Wood adds 10.0 points and a team-best 7.9 rebounds on a regular basis.
Admission to all NE-10 Tournament games is $6 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and children under 12-years-old. Saint Rose students with a valid ID will be admitted free on Sunday.
