GOLDEN KNIGHTS CHALK UP KEY WIN VERSUS LE MOYNE

Sophomore forward Amy Voelkel
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose outrebounded visiting Le Moyne 15-4 on the offensive glass and generated 19 points off of 18 turnovers en route to a key 57-51 Northeast-10 Conference victory that was aired live by Time Warner Sports tonight. The Dolphins (13-11/10-9 NE-10) came into the evening one-half game up on the Golden Knights (15-8/10-8 NE-10) in seventh place with the final two weeks of the regular-season looming.

Sophomore forward Amy Voelkel recorded her first career “double-double” to lead Saint Rose with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals in 27 minutes off the bench. Senior guard Dana Brown scored 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second period, while senior forward Ashley Anderson hauled down 12 rebounds and tossed in six points.

The Golden Knights, who have now won six of their last seven, took control with a 10-0 jaunt at the 11:45 mark of the second half that transformed a two point, 37-35, lead into a 12 point, 47-35, cushion with 7:24 remaining. Senior center Lauren Revesz drained a pair of free throws to ignite the charge and Brown capped it by knocking down a jumper in the paint and a 3-pointer on the following possession.

Junior center Courtney Coryea snapped the drought for Le Moyne by nailing a “three” of her own, but Voelkel was equal to the task on the other end to keep it a 12 point, 50-38, ballgame with 6:33 showing on the clock. Senior forward Vanessa Holden then hit a jumper on the other end, and junior guard Meg Murphy canned a pair of free throws to get the Dolphins within single digits, 50-42, but they were never really able to make a serious run down the stretch.

Murphy finished with 12 points and Coryea wound up with nine points and nine boards for Le Moyne, which had all nine players who saw time figure in the scoring column.

In the first half, there were four lead changes throughout the opening 11 minutes at which point Saint Rose used an 11-3 run to gain a nine point, 26-17, lead with 5:13 to go. Le Moyne countered with seven unanswered points until Anderson knocked down a jumper to give the Golden Knights a four point, 28-24, lead at the break.

Also for Saint Rose, junior guard Elizabeth Buckley nailed a 3-pointer that capped the Golden Knights first half spurt and propelled her into fifth place all-time in school annals. She now has 109 for her career.

Both clubs get back to the hardwood with conference games Saturday. The Golden Knights head to Waltham, MA for a 1:30 pm date at Bentley, while the Dolphins have a 1:00 pm home encounter with Saint Anselm in Syracuse.
