ALBANY - The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team put together arguably its best second half defensive effort of the season, limiting American International College to just 17 points and five field goals throughout the final 20 minutes en route to a 60-44 Northeast-10 Conference victory this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. It was the third straight win for the Golden Knights (8-4/3-4 NE-10) and first in five meetings against the Yellow Jackets (9-6/5-3 NE-10).
American International jumped out to an early 13-2 edge in the opening 3:08 after hitting its first five shots from the floor. Five different players scored during that span as sophomore forward Kristin Boesenberg and junior forward Stacy Boisvert punctuated the spurt with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws.
Saint Rose quickly responded by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 11-0 over the next 4:16 to make it a 13-13 affair with 12:36 to go in the first half. Junior guard
Elizabeth Buckley and senior guard
Suzana Sormaz nailed back-to-back treys to close out the run.
Neither squad created much separation the rest of the period. American International took a six point, 21-15, advantage following a 3-pointer by freshman guard Michelle DeRoma. Both teams suffered almost a four minute drought that was finally halted with a pair of free throws from senior center
Lauren Revesz that cut the Golden Knights' deficit to four, 21-17. Saint Rose then managed to cut the gap to one, 27-26, at halftime as sophomore guard
Lynsey Timbrouck knocked down a “three” with four seconds left.
The Golden Knights assumed control in the early stages of the second stanza behind a 17-2 jaunt. Senior guard
Dana Brown opened the period with a jumper and Saint Rose never trailed again, creating a 50-34 margin before Boesenberg ended the run with a 3-pointer with 6:48 left. The Yellow Jackets, who finished with their lowest scoring total of the season, shot only 18.5 percent (5-for-27) from the floor after intermission.
Senior forward
Ashley Anderson led all scorers with 16 points to go with 15 rebounds for the Golden Knights. Revesz finished with 14 points and five boards, while Timbrouck added six points, 10 caroms and three steals.
Boesenberg tossed in nine points, all from beyond the arc, to pace the Yellow Jackets. Boisvert, the conference's second leading scorer heading into today (17.9 ppg), was held to just seven points following a 1-for-12 shooting effort from the floor.
Saint Rose returns to action Tuesday when the Golden Knights travel to the University of New Haven for a 5:30 pm NE-10 contest. Meanwhile, American International will head to Southern Connecticut State University for a 5:30 pm tip-off that evening.
