MANCHESTER, NH – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team managed only two field goals throughout the first 8:30 of the second half that allowed host Southern New Hampshire University to walk away with a 64-57 Northeast-10 Conference victory this afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
The Golden Knights (9-6/4-6 NE-10) went into the locker room with a slim 27-24 edge after sophomore forward
Amy Voelkel buried a pair of free throws and classmate
Liz Tremblay converted a layup for the final points of the half.
The Penmen (10-5/5-5 NE-10) then put the clamps on Saint Rose in the second period while shooting at a 62.5 percent (15-for-24) clip from the floor, thus transforming their three point halftime deficit into a six point, 37-31 lead at the 12:28 mark. The Golden Knights stayed close by scoring five straight points thanks to a 3-pointer from senior guard
Dana Brown and two free throws by senior center
Lauren Revesz.
With SNHU now up only one, 37-36, with 10:15 to go, the Penmen finally took control behind a 15-6 run that made it a 52-42 ballgame with just over five minutes left. Senior guard Stephanie Houghton had eight points during the outburst and freshman guard Christine Duffy added a critical three-point play before a Houghton layup capped things off.
Saint Rose did not go away quietly, reeling off a 10-2 jaunt of its own that cut its deficit to two, 54-52, at the 2:08 mark. Brown and Revesz buried back-to-back 3-pointers and senior forward
Ashley Anderson laid the ball in twice. However, the Penmen went 8-for-11 from the stripe throughout the final minute of play to seal their third straight victory and eighth in nine games.
Revesz wound up with a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds despite battling foul trouble for much of the afternoon. Meanwhile, junior guard
Elizabeth Buckley contributed 14 points and Brown tossed in 13 to pace the Golden Knights.
Houghton led all scorers with 19 points to go with six boards and a pair of assists for SNHU. Junior forward Ashara Carrington recorded 16 points and five caroms in only 15 minutes of action and fellow junior forward Julia Houghtaling had nine points and seven rebounds.
Saint Rose, which went 2-2 throughout its four-game, seven-day stretch that concluded today, returns home Wednesday as the Golden Knights are scheduled to host Franklin Pierce University in a 5:30 pm tip-off. The Penmen will have a week off before heading to league rival Assumption College next Saturday for a 1:30 pm tip.
