ALBANY – Saint Michael's held off a late spurt by The College of Saint Rose to hand the Golden Knights a 68-66 Northeast-10 Conference setback this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Saint Rose (5-3/2-3 NE-10) cut into a five point deficit with 4:28 remaining to give itself a chance with the game's final possession. On the ensuing trip, senior center
Lauren Revesz spun on the right block and drove baseline, but could not get a clean look as the Purple Knights (5-3/3-3 NE-10) ran their win streak to three games.
Revesz led Saint Rose in scoring for the fifth time this season with 21 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard
Dana Brown added 14 points, while sophomore forward
Amy Voelkel had nine points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench. Sophomore guard
Lynsey Timbrouck added eight points and six boards; to go with five assists and three steals.
Saint Michael's rallied from a six point shortfall, 39-33, early in the second half with a 19-7 spurt that afforded the Purple Knights their largest lead of the afternoon via a six point advantage, 52-46, at the 10:22 mark. Saint Michael's never trailed again. Sophomore forward Logan Pintka knocked down a jumper to ignite the run and junior guard Alexis Keller drained a 3-pointer to cap it.
Saint Rose countered with six unanswered points to draw even, 52-52, two minutes later; and was still within two points on three more occasions down the stretch. The final time followed a runner by senior forward
Ashley Anderson that made it 65-63 Saint Michael's with 1:07 to go.
Freshman guard Coreen Hennessy then made two free throws with 45 seconds left. On the next possession, Saint Rose rebounded a pair of its own 3-pointers before junior guard
Elizabeth Buckley knocked one down from the top of the key to cut the differential to one, 67-66, with 13 ticks showing. Saint Michael's freshman guard Caitlin Quinn then managed to go 1-for-2 from the stripe with nine seconds showing for what turned out to be the game's final points.
Keller tossed in 16 of her career-high 27 points after halftime to lead the Purple Knights. Pintka tossed in 20 points and senior center Anna Florent added 10 in 19 minutes of reserve duty.
Saint Rose returns home Monday to face league rival Bentley at 5:30 pm. The game, along with the 7:30 pm men's contest, will be aired live on Time Warner Sports Channel 3. Meanwhile, Saint Michael's has a week off before heading to Syracuse for a 1:00 pm NE-10 contest at Le Moyne next Saturday.
