GARDEN CITY, NY – The College of Saint Rose ran its record to 5-0 for the second time in the past nine years with a 66-44 non-conference victory at Adelphi University tonight. In the process, the Golden Knights handed the host Panthers (3-1) their first setback of the year.
Saint Rose forced Adelphi into more turnovers (17) than field goals made (16) and held the Panthers to just 29.1 percent (16-for-55) shooting from the floor. The Golden Knights also helped their cause by going 14-for-16 from the foul line on the strength of a 10-for-10 effort from senior guard
Dana Brown.
Senior forward
Ashley Anderson filled the box score by tying her career-high with 16 rebounds to go with 13 points, three assists and four steals for Saint Rose. Brown had a team-high 18 points and junior guard
Elizabeth Buckley added 14.
Senior forward Serita Lee maintained her “double-double” average on the year for Adelphi by recording 19 points and 17 rebounds.
After coming out of the locker room at intermission with a 29-26 lead, Saint Rose (5-0) held Adelphi to three baskets throughout the opening 13 minutes of the second period to put the game out of reach with a 56-34 advantage. The Golden Knights punctuated the spurt in stylish fashion by canning four consecutive 3-pointers. Buckley drained the first and added two more for good measure after senior guard
Suzana Sormaz buried the second.
The first half showed some promise for an exciting ballgame. It was not to be though as Saint Rose recovered from a three point, 14-11, deficit with 11:44 left by rattling off 10 unanswered points that put the Golden Knights in the black for good. Brown capped the spurt with a pair of free throws to make it 21-14 Saint Rose with 6:45 showing on the clock. The Panthers climbed back to within three at the break, but the Golden Knights outscored Adelphi 37-18 throughout the final 20 minutes to keep their unblemished record intact.
Saint Rose returns to Northeast-10 Conference action Sunday with a 1:30 game at Pace University in Pleasantville. Meanwhile, Adelphi will host Bridgeport one week from tomorrow at 5:30 pm.
