SAINT ROSE DEFEATS NE-10 RIVAL SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE 92-73

Senior Center Lauren Revesz
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team held visiting Southern Connecticut State without a field goal throughout the final six minutes en route to a 92-73 victory this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (4-0/2-0 NE-10) owned a 76-69 advantage with 3:53 remaining, but outscored the Owls 16-4 the rest of the way to keep their unblemished record intact.

Saint Rose shot a blistering 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the arc and 54.7 percent (35-for-64) from the floor in general, while overcoming 25 turnovers by forcing the Owls into 33 miscues on the afternoon.

Senior center Lauren Revesz led six Saint Rose players in double-figures scoring with 22 points, despite struggling with foul trouble that limited her to 23 minutes in what marked the Golden Knights 2008-09 home opener. Meanwhile, senior guard Dana Brown and junior guard Elizabeth Buckley tossed in 17 and 15 respectively.

As for Southern Connecticut State (1-2/0-2 NE-10), junior guard Lexi Allen scored 19 of her game-high 26 points in the first half to pace the Owls. Junior forward Jacqueline Johannes recorded a “double-double” behind 17 points and 12 rebounds; while sophomore guard Logan Lentz finished with 10 points, six assists and four steals.

Saint Rose led the entire way with the exception of two ties in the first half. The second followed an Allen 3-pointer that made it 39-39 with 53 seconds to go. However, Saint Rose put its stamp on the afternoon with back-to-back treys from Revesz that made it a 45-39 ballgame at the break.

Southern Connecticut State still hung around for a while and was within four, 56-52, with 12:43 remaining when Buckley drained a trey and Revesz finished in the paint to make it 64-54 Saint Rose two minutes later. The Owls were unable to get any closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Senior guard Suzana Sormaz, senior forward Ashley Anderson and sophomore forward Amy Voelkel rounded out the double-figures scorers for the Golden Knights. Sormaz finished with 12 points in 16 minutes off the bench, while Anderson and Voelkel wound up with 11 and 10 respectively. The latter two also combined for 13 rebounds.

Saint Rose returns to action Tuesday with a non-league game at Adelphi. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm on Long Island. Meanwhile, the Owls will host Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
