Note on In-Person Attendance at Games: All games are subject to change based upon COVID-19 surveillance testing for both The College of Saint Rose and its opponents. In addition, per New York State Department of Health guidelines,
no spectators at this point will be permitted to attend any games scheduled for the Plumeri Sports Complex or on the road. The College will continue to monitor this situation with the hope of potentially having fans in some capacity at a later date.
ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose is understandably anxious and excited to get back on the field after all but the opening week of the 2020 campaign was canceled in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
"We're certainly thrilled to get back to playing after more than a year away," said head coach
Wayne Jones. "We want to be playing our best at the end of the year and want to continue to build upon a winning culture."
Â
Just about all of the key returnees are back from last year's 6-6 team that was just starting to hit its stride by winning four of its last five games throughout its annual spring break trek through the Mid-Atlantic.
Â
Among the veterans are senior shortstop
Andrew Pedone, senior outfielders
Stephan MacMeans,
Brian Hill and
Garrett Klahr, junior first baseman
Jack McDonald, senior utility
Samuel Brioso, junior infielder
Francisco Infante, and junior third baseman
Tyler Osborne, along with a pair of catchers in junior
Max Gebauer and sophomore
Derek Haughey.
Â
Pedone and MacMeans were the team's top offensive producers in last year's small sample size of 12 games. Pedone led the squad with a .385 batting average, a .509 on-base percentage and 11 runs scored among those players with at least two plate appearances per game. McDonald paced the way with nine RBI and a .543 slugging percentage, and was second behind a .371 batting average.
Â
On the mound, Jones said he'll rely on the staff's depth as the pandemic's induced limited practice time has not allowed anyone to reach their usual pitch count. That being said, the trio of senior right-handers in
John Braun and
Frankie Pizzo, and sophomore right-hander
Randall Alejo, who were expected to lead last year's group, is being counted upon to do the same again at the onset of the season.
Â
The Golden Knights open their abbreviated 2021 campaign this weekend with a pair of home doubleheaders versus Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University. Saturday's twin-bill is scheduled to get underway at noon, while Monday's is set for a 1:00 pm start.
