Box Score
ALBANY–Daemen rebounded from a 1-0 deficit by scoring a pair of second half goals to upend The College of Saint Rose 2-1 in a non-conference affair at
Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex this afternoon. The Golden Knights (0-1-1) manufactured a 5-3 shot-on-goal advantage and developed nine corner kick opportunities, while yielding only four. However, the Wildcats (1-0-0) scored nine minutes apart to win their 2014 season-opener.
Â
Junior midfielder/forward
Nick Iuorno put Saint Rose up 1-0 with 21:28 elapsed when he collected the ball at the top of box, spun right, and let go a shot that slipped under the crossbar.
Â
However, sophomore midfielder Nick Sammarco leveled the game with 57:36 gone by when he gathered a corner kick, dribbled to the right side of the area and slipped a shot inside the right post. Sophomore forward Cole Beale then struck for what held up as the game-winner when he found space up the left side and drove a low ball into the far corner.
Â
Senior forward
Ercan Kilic had perhaps the best chance for the Golden Knights to deadlock it. Kilic delivered a shot in traffic that forced Daemen senior keeper Matt Daddario to make a diving save to his right in the 75th minute. Saint Rose kept pressing forward to engineer three more corner kicks, but a clear scoring opportunity never really materialized.
Â
Between the posts, junior keeper
Colan Balkwell came up with one save throughout the distance for the Golden Knights. Daddario turned aside four threats to keep the Wildcats in the match.
Â
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home Wednesday, September 10 to take on Saint Thomas Aquinas at 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Wildcats have a 4:00 pm date Tuesday at Le Moyne in Syracuse.
