QUICK START LEADS SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS PAST GOLDEN KNIGHTS

Junior midfielder Nick Iuorno had an assist for The College of Saint Rose tonight.
Box Score

ALBANY–Saint Thomas Aquinas scored three times in the opening 14 minutes for what proved to be barely enough to upend The College of Saint Rose 3-2 this evening at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights (0-2-1) countered with two strikes three minutes apart late in the first half, but were never able to find the equalizer.

Freshman midfielder Kledis Capollari and sophomore forward Joshua Hanif both scored for Saint Rose, while junior midfielder Nick Iuorno and freshman midfielder Matthew Nocito each had an assist.

Sophomore keeper Christian Esposito and junior Colan Balkwell made a collective six saves for Saint Rose, while senior Nicholas Palumbo turned aside three shots at the other end.

The Spartans came out with a flourish. Sophomore midfielder Julius Werner, sophomore forward Duncan Kasibante, and junior forward Michael Corbi collectively put the Spartans (1-0-1) up 3-0 on their first five shots with a mere 13:10 elapsed. Werner struck in the initial 31 seconds to set the tone and then Kasibante made it 2-0 at the 8:38 mark. Less than five minutes later, Corbi registered what proved to be the game-winner.

Saint Rose subsequently put itself back in it by outshooting Saint Thomas Aquinas by a 5-3 margin throughout the final 31 minutes of the first stanza. Capollari took a pass from Nocito and drove home a shot inside the lower right-hand corner from the left side of the area with 34:44 gone by. Hanif then deflected in an Iuorno cross to make things interesting, but neither team could find the back of the net during the final 45 minutes as much of the play took place in the middle of the pitch.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights conclude their season-opening four-game home stretch next Tuesday, September 16 when New Haven visits for the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference opener. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Spartans are back on the road this Saturday with an 11:00 am date at East Stroudsburg.
