Box Score

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State this evening at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The visiting Owls scored the game's lone goal just past the midway point of the extra session to dash the Golden Knights hopes of getting above the .500 mark this late in the season for the first time in their NCAA era (1992).

The game was fairly evenly played although Saint Rose (3-4-0/1-3-0 NE-10) had a superlative chance in each half to break through. The Owls (2-1-1/2-0-1 NE-10) outshot the Golden Knights by an 11-8 margin and engineered a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks although Saint Rose dictated much of the pace in the first half and subsequently walked into the locker room with a 6-3 shot advantage at intermission.

Regardless, sophomore midfielder Tyler Naef ended the game with 95:38 elapsed when he collected a pass that rolled through traffic off the foot of freshman midfielder Christian Samaniego and connected on a shot from about 12-yards out in the middle of the area.

Saint Rose came out with a hop in its step and it nearly paid off. The Golden Knights generated a 5-2 edge in shots midway through the first stanza and almost had one with 19:48 gone by after senior back Dylan Klippenstein made a nice run up the right sideline and delivered a cross to senior forward Juan Garzon who rattled his ensuing shot off the right post.

In the 57th minute, junior midfielder Drew Wingate sprung senior forward Jacob Sand who dribbled up the middle alone on Owls junior keeper Stephen Sasso. However, Sasso was able to come up with a key save that foreshadowed what would turn out to be a frustrating evening for the Golden Knights.

Between the posts, sophomore keeper Colan Balkwell recorded three saves for Saint Rose while Sasso mirrored that effort at the other end for the Owls.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights travel to Long Island next Wednesday, October 2 to face conference rival Adelphi at 7:00 pm. The Owls are also on the road for their next contest. They will meet NE-10 foe Merrimack this Friday at 7:00 pm in North Andover, MA in a match featuring the league's second and third place teams.
