SPARKILL, NY –The College of Saint Rose, looking to go 3-0 for the first time in its NCAA era (1992), fell just short with a 1-0 setback at Saint Thomas Aquinas this afternoon.
The two teams generated 14 shots apiece, although the Golden Knights (2-1-0) had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks and a 5-4 advantage in shots-on-goal. Regardless, sophomore midfielder Daouda Kone found the back of the net in the 17th minute for what proved to be the game-winner for the Spartans (1-1-1).
Sophomore keeper
Colan Balkwell recorded three saves in his Saint Rose debut, while junior Nathan Mangione held off the Golden Knights by making all five of his stops throughout the second half.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose is scheduled to play its 2013
Northeast-10 Conference opener this Saturday, September 14 at Stonehill. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm. Meanwhile, Saint Thomas Aquinas opens its East Coast Conference slate with a 3:00 pm match next Wednesday, September 18 at University of the District of Columbia.
